It was all about Wrestlemania this week on GIR Radio. With experts like Larry Zbyszko and Real Deal from wrestlecrap.com this "roundtable discussion" was very informative and entertaining. Check it out at www.getinthering.tv but of course with Larry Z on the phone GIR Radio managed to get some great quotes and comments from the legend. Then in an exclusive interview Mike Rotunda joined the boys to school them in the old school ways, talk about what it felt like to be involved in the first Wrestlemania, and much more. This is a rare interview with a true professional in the business, and might be the only recorded interview of Mike Rotunda that exists.

-While discussing the DDP/Christian match, Larry Zbyszko give his thoughts on DDP. He feels that Page had gotten a bad rap in the past, for getting far in WCW for being Eric Bischoff friend. Z feels DDP is a very hard working guy, who puts time into developing knowledge for the business. Larry remembers when Page would take him out for dinners just to get the opportunity to pick Z's brain with questions about the business. He would even tutor Page in the Power Plant, going over moves. HE feels that fans should look at DDP for the wrestler he is, not who he knows. 

-Larry makes the statement that he has refused to purchase a Wrestlemania PPV or even watch one on tape, until this years. He intends on going to Chris Kanyon's house to watch it with Terry Taylor, Scott Hudson, (picture that PPV party). Larry is intrigued to see how the Rock and Hogan work together, but also states he refused to give McMahon $40. 

-Sir A takes Zbyszko to task for his promo on the WWA PPV. Mainly because Zbyszko claimed that Chris Jericho was too short to be a "superduper" star. Z feels like it has nothing to do with height, but stature. He feels that Chris just doesn't give off that aura of being a champion. He compares Jericho to a RVD, who no matter how good they are, they are just going to come off as "happy, middle of the card guys". Zbyszko wishes them all the luck, but still feels that you can't compare them to guys like Austin or the Rock or even Undertaker. They don't have that intimidating persona that those guys posses. 

-Zbyszko respects William Regal for being able to get a crowd to hate him. He also puts over Kurt Angle.

-Talk turns to the Hall/Austin match. Zbyszko surprisingly puts over Scott Hall as a great talent, Phantom was so convinced they hated each other during their WCW that he couldn't believe there was no real heat. Z actually goes on to say that he broke Scott Hall into the business when they both wrestled for the AWA. He felt that Hall respected him then, but years later in WCW Hall hit a "prima Donna" phase. Larry is actually frustrated with the way Hall's career has turned out because of his substance abuse problems. He felt that a talent like Hall should have acted more professional. He feels that it is the responsibility of the top guys in a promotion to keep it together, so the undercard guys and the promotion itself could continue to thrive, Hall just didn't do that.

-Phantom asks about Larry's controversial comment about Louie Spicolli on the Nitro when it was announced that Spicolli had passed away. Zbyszko had said something to the effect of "I have no comment about Louie Spicolli". Z claims that fans misunderstood the comment thinking that Larry was continuing their storyline "feud", even after the wrestler had died. Larry goes on to say that he saw a great deal of promise in Spicolli, he wouldn't have agreed to wrestle him if he didn't. Larry was frustrated that Louie passed away from drug abuse, but was specifically told by the directors of Nitro who were screaming in his headset not to say anything. Z feels that the reality of the situation was that Louie OD'd and WCW/Time Warner didn't want to touch it, so he said what they were screaming into his headset to say "No Comment". Z wishes he could have said something nice about Louie, but claims he was an employee of WCW and had to do what his bosses told him to do. 

-Zbyszko was heartbroken when WCW went under. He felt he knew how to save it, but no one would listen. Zbyszko decided to take himself off Nitro when Russo came back into power, because he saw the writing on the wall that the company was doomed. 

-Larry Z left the show, and Mike Rotunda joined the boys. Phantom and Sir Adam were perplexed about Mike's last name, was it Rotunda or Rotundo? Mike confirmed that his legal last name is Rotunda. He wrestled under Rotundo when he first started in the business because a co-wrestler claimed it would be easier for fans to remember. After Mike left the WWF in the mid 80's for the NWA, he started using the Rotunda name, because he didn't want to deal with the WWF if they decided to claim that the name was copyrighted. 

-Mike is now teaming with Dr. Death in Japan (GIR's guest last week) and knew him when they were in college. Mike wrestled and played football for Syracuse (won the famous punt, pass and kick competition- as Jim Ross would always bring up). Despite calming down in the last few years, Mike still puts over Dr. Death as a tough SOB in the ring. 

-Mike reveals that Dusty Rhodes was the person who came up with the idea of the Varsity Club in the late 80's. This was used as a vehicle to turn Mike into a heel, which he had never been. He liked Dusty Rhodes, and always got along with him. 

-Rotunda loved teaming up with both Ted Dibiase and Barry Windham during his stays in the WWF. He has to say he likes Barry better though, because Windham is married to Mike's sister. When he teamed with Barry, business of the WWF was much better then when he formed Money Inc. with Ted. Every arena they went to was sold out, and they were on the road 300 days out of the year. This caused Barry and Mike to burn out quickly. They were young and green at the time and Mike just decided to leave the business one night and disappeared. Barry was under the impression that Mike quit the WWF, which cause Barry to realize that he was burnt out too and Barry quit. What Barry didn't know was Mike had a change of heart, and never officially quit. Mike has always put his families' needs in front of his own and has been happily married for 18 years because of it. 

-Rotunda had the most fun portraying the IRS character in the WWF. He loved to get the fans to hate him. It took him a while to get used to wrestling in the business suit, but after a while he liked it better during the cold months. Also, he got less infections from dirty rings then he did when he was wearing tights. 

-Rotunda thinks he was the longest reigning TV champion in the WCW days, reigning for 18 months. He feels its a testament to him as a performer that promoters always allowed him a carry belts for long stretches of time. As tag champ with Windham and Dibiase he held the belt for long times too. He feels that, while he's not the best wrestler in the world, he was always able to keep his heat. He feels that is the lost art of the business, being able to keep your heat while establishing new stars at the same time. He thinks that wrestlers today all want to be The Rock, or Hulk Hogan- but guys are needed to fill a different part of the sports hierarchy as well.

-Rotunda knows Don Frye very well from his stints in Japan and has great respect for guys like him in the UFC. Shoot fighter need to do allot of things very well to survive, wrestle, choke holds, kick, box and street fight are just some of the techniques that Mike feels a successful fighter needs to know. While he would have loved to try out shoot fights in his prime, he would never try it now. 

-Rotunda & Barry Windham used to have the "Real American" theme song before Hulk Hogan took it from them when they left. When Rotunda returned to team with Dan Spivey as the new US Express, they couldn't get the theme song away from hulk Hogan

-Rotunda portrayed VK Wallstreet in WCW before coming to the WWF as IRS. When Michael Milken was indicted Rotunda was interviewed in the USA Today newspaper and appeared on Inside Edition. Because Vince McMahon loves mainstream exposure he offered Mike a ridiculous amount of money to come to the WWF and spun off the character as IRS. Then years later when Mike returned to WCW he was given back the name Wallstreet because they had it trademarked. 

-Rotunda liked working for Vince McMahon and feels that he has been working for years to become the only game in town and now it's a reality. When Mike first started wrestling there were 30 territories he could go to, now there's only one. Mike felt that the Turner years were a challenge for Vince, but always thought that WCW was being mismanaged and was only a matter of time until Vince controlled the business.

-Rotunda didn't like the reunion of the Varsity Club when they were put with Lei Meow as a sort of comedy gimmick in 2000. Mike had a deal working in New Japan for WCW as a member of nWo Japan for three years prior to being told to return to the states. He was wrestling in top matches with Muta, Chono, Tenzan, and Kojima until he was ordered to be on Nitro with the Varsity Club. It only lasted two TV's and Mike felt they did ignorant stuff with him, then when the angle was seen as a failure he was taken off TV for 8 months. He felt that was that was the typical MO for WCW, try something, give it no direction, and then abandon it. Mike goes on to say that not only was he not working for 8 months, WCW ended up screwing him out of the last year of his contract. Luckily for Mike, he was already established in Japan, and got a call from Steve Williams asking to team up with him in All Japan and he's been there ever since. 

-Rotunda's younger son loves watching wrestling and he was going to watch Wrestlemania with him.
