It was Sir Adam's birthday celebration on GIR Radio this week, as the
Phantom surprised his co-host with several presents. One was a skit done
by GIR's own Drama Group "The GIR Players", based on Hulk Hogan mistakenly calling the Godfather, "Papa Shango". Listen for yourself at
www.getinthering.tv at this wild skit. He also brought back Norman
Smiley's #1 fan Big Vick Comstock, for some "Norman-isms". But the next
two surprises created for some great wrestling radio: "The Funkster" Allan
Funk started off with a birthday promo like only Funk-A-Mania could
deliver. Then the wild man himself and new grandfather(!?!?!) "Dr.
Death" Steve Williams created havoc for the rest of the show.
Get in the Ring radio airs every Sunday at Noon eastern time on the radio
at 1240 AM WGBB in the NY/NJ/CT area and live on the internet at
http://www.getinthering.tv
Join us this week for a Wrestlemania preview with guests like wrestlecrap.com's Real Deal, NY Daily News wrestling
Columnist The Slammer, Vampiro, and an exclusive with wrestling great Mike
Rotundo!! This promises to be the wildest edition of GIR Radio EVER!!!
-Dr. Death joined the show to a crazy intro, he had just gotten back from
wrestling in Houston Texas and slammed Mack Daddy through some tables.
-Despite working in Japan, Doc doesn't wear sumo wrestling sashes. From
flying back and forth to Japan all the time Doc feels like he steps into a
time machine. Japan is a day ahead of the US, and Doc wishes he could
somehow make money by betting on horses before they race. Williams is
working on his 22nd year in the wrestling business, he broke into
wrestling grappling with Bob Roop. He claimed that in his first few
matches Roop wanted to shoot on the Doc, but Doc shot right back and laid
Roop right on his back.
-Talk turns to the Brawl for All WWF shoot fight form 1999. Doc was a
favorite to win the whole thing, and was being groomed for a tough guy run
in the WWF. Unfortunately he was knocked out by Bart Gunn, and during the
match Doc tore his hamstring in 2 places and tore his butt muscle. He
takes his hat off to Bart Gunn for knocking him out, but felt that every
night the WWF changed the rules. Originally it was intended to be boxer
vs. wrestler matches. When Gunn knocked out Williams, it was the first
time in his life he was ever knocked unconscious.
-Williams also said that there were plans for him to start a feud with
Steve Austin while Williams was paired with Jim Ross, when Ross couldn't
announce because of his 2nd bout with Bells Palsy. Despite how much they
tried the fans couldn't accept Doc and Ross as heels.
-Talk turns to Doc's relationship with Jim Ross. Doc feels that Ross
screwed him over in his WWF contract. Ross convinced Williams to leave
his lucrative All-Japan wrestling contract with Baba for a WWF career.
With the money Williams turned down from Baba, he could have retired in 3
years. When plans didn't work out with Doc in the states, he was ordered
to return to Japan to work for Baba's rival FMW promotion. Doc said he
wouldn't do it and compared it like working in the NFL and then going to
the USFL. He would ruin his name in the politically charged Japanese
wrestling scene. Because of his refusal the WWF claimed he was breaching
his contract and it was terminated.
-Doc reveals that he recently became a grandfather, two days prior to the
interview.
-Doc loves wrestling in Japan the most, and looks back to his match with
Kobashi that lasted 29 minutes as his favorite encounter. Doc went for a
knee scope 2 weeks prior to the match that was eventually voted match of
the year in Japan. He wrestled in front of 25,000 people.
-Doc reminisces his match against Barry Windham in Starrcade 1987, and
calls the old NWA/UWF "good wrestling". Doc claims he can't even watch
RAW or Smackdown anymore because on the emphasis on storyline over
grappling.
-Doc feels like the Japanese wrestling fans like the bigger tough
brawlers, like Stan Hansen, Terry Gordy, Bruiser Brody, and himself
because they are in contrast to some of the more technical native Japanese
wrestlers. He feels like Steve Austin or Shawn Michaels couldn't have
become stars in Japan, because the workrate is too great, he feels like
Bret Hart could have though. He likes Sushi, but he usually craves steaks.
He speaks some Japanese for the GIR boys.
-Doc claims that he's had to defend himself every time he hits the ring
with a Japanese wrestler. He's missing some teeth because of spin kicks.
Doc thinks he's never been exposed well in the US, when he was really
ready to take America by storm as UWF Champion Bill Watts sold the
company to Jim Crockett. Doc was put into mid-card programs because he
wasn't a part of the NWA "clique". The clique back then consisted of Ric
Flair, and his buddies.
-Doc talks about going backstage when the WWF in Shreveport LA. He
brought his 8 year old son, "Dr. Death Jr." with him. Williams claims his
son was asking Rock, Austin, Taker for autographs and pictures "He
controlled the backstage area".
-Doc reminisces about his friend Terry Gordy, who passed away in the
summer. He was like brothers with Gordy, they never had a fight and
helped each other through the hard times. He said when wrestlers hit hard
time, they hit very hard. On the road all the time Gordy surcumed to
drugs, which Doc. didn't get involved with because of his relationship with the lord.
-Doc currently owns Dr. Death's Maui Tan and Smoothie Bar in Shrievport.
