The legendary manager of The Undertaker & the current owner/operator of
Gulf South Wrestling, Percy Pringle III (Paul Bearer), was guest on this past
week's live edition (10/31/05) of Monday Night Mayhem's "Hardcore
Halloween Spook-tacular" -- which can be heard in streaming audio every week
exclusively on The Monday Night Mayhem Radio Network (MondayNightMayhem.com,
RadioWrestling.net, & AudioWrestling.com, your official home of "The Spring
Break Incident" Video-On- Demand, featuring SmackDown! Diva, Stacy Keibler).
The interview with this WWE Legend is now available to hear for free in Real
Audio.
Here are highlights from the interview provided by the show's correspondent, Dan
"Ho- Ju" Kriegbaum, of www.MondayNightMayhem.com.
========================
The Big Mosh welcomed Percy to the show, with some Halloween talk, including the
heartwarming story that Percy was waiting for his grand-daughter to arrive. The
Big Mosh then mentioned that he saw two people dressed up as Paul Bearer & The
Undertaker on the Chippawa party in Buffalo, NY (the hometown of The Mayhem)
district the Saturday before Halloween night.
The Big Mosh then switched gears to mentioning the newly-released WWE DVD that
features a career retrospective of Paul Bearer's "creature of the night," The
Undertaker. Mosh asked Percy how long he personally thinks "The Dead Man" will
stick around for in-ring competition, in addition to some of Percy's favorite
moments working with The Undertaker. Percy says that he doesn't know how long he
will stick around, also noting that he has so many memories with The Taker --
but he mentions some of the firsts, including Percy's first time in Madison
Square Garden, and The Undertaker's first WWE Championship victory against "The
Immortal" Hulk Hogan. After Mosh & special guest co-hosts, Darren From Lockport
& Ho-Ju (fellow MNM show contributors/correspondents) mentioned some of the
crowning moments in The Undertaker's length career with the WWE, Percy wanted to
put a main issue of his to rest -- that both him & The Undertaker were never
offered a deal to "jump ship" to WCW during the days of "The Monday Night Wars"
-- and that he himself would never jumped over to World Championship Wrestling,
even a deal was offered to him.
The Big Mosh took the listeners back to last spring & WrestleMania 20 at Madison
Square Garden as one of his personal & favorite Undertaker/Paul Bearer moments,
asking Percy to re-live the moment for The Mayhem audience and describe what
that time was like for him professionally. Percy then gives what he calls the
"Reader's Digest" version of the story -- which the rest can be found at his
website (www.percypringle.com). He mentioned that he was over 400 lbs for
awhile, and through some personal problems, he got up to 525 lbs. He then
brought up how he received a call from Stamford, CT from the then Head of Talent
Relations, Jim Ross -- who left a message on his answering machine. Percy said
the message was about an offer to go back to the WWE, and Percy wouldn't answer
his calls, JR then e-mailed him -- to which he then read. Percy explained that
JR then asked "What can we do for you," as Percy himself at that point was going
through a lot of personal problems. Percy mentioned the thought/contemplation of
gastric bypass surgery, in which Jim Ross got back to him the next day, and
offered him a contract and to help him get back in shape. Again, the rest of
this amazing recovery story can be found at www.percypringle.com. He said
though, that the return to "The World's Most Famous Arena," and being taken care
of the way he was meant the world to him.
The Big Mosh then brought up the end of that short run of Paul Bearer, at The
Great American Bash Pay-Per-View in 2004, when he was concealed into a concrete
crypt at the hands of The Undertaker. Percy mentioned that it was "Paul Bearer
who saved Bill Moody's life." Percy said he had emergency gall bladder surgery
during the whole "Do The Right Thing" angle -- where Team 3-D & Paul Heyman
kidnapped Paul Bearer. Percy says that Paul Bearer was never "killed" or
"murdered", and that a return is always possible. Percy said that he was
concerned about being put into the concrete -- as he actually had a button in
his hand which lit up a light backstage stage, in which if it ever went off, it
would mean something was wrong, and sledgehammers would then have been brought
in to get him out.
Speaking of medical emergencies, The Big Mosh then went onto the recent
developments regarding Jim Ross being taken off of WWE television -- and the now
infamous Dr. Heinie vignette. Percy said that the angle could've gone hundreds
of different ways, but unfortunately it's Vince's company and it goes how Vince
wants. Percy praised JR, by saying he's the best commentator hands-down next to
Gordon Solie. He then said that he has had contact with JR since his surgery,
and that he is doing well. Percy then praised all the creative guys backstage,
saying that he could never do it, even though Vince has hit some "home runs" &
and also some "foul balls." Percy then says he didn't see the Dr. Heinie
segment, but he did see another infamous WWE vignette, Katie Vick, and names
that the most sickening thing he's ever seen in professional wrestling or
sports-entertainment.
The Big Mosh then turned the conversation over to TNA (sort of) -- mentioning
Jerry Jarrett's recent trip to Stamford, CT with Oleg Prudius. The Big Mosh then
asked if Jerry will go back to the WWE, and if Oleg was a simple cover-up. Percy
said "anything is possible," and wouldn't be surprised if Jerry Jarrett was on
WWE Monday Night RAW, and tells us at The Mayhem that we shouldn't be surprised
either. The Big Mosh then asks if we'll ever see Percy in TNA, whether it's
on-screen, on the writing team, or elsewhere backstage -- to which Percy
again said "he'll never say
never."
The MNM Crew & Percy also talked about Vince Russo's new promotion (Ring Of
Glory), and his newly found devotion to religion. Percy mentioned Vince's
writing ability in the WWE, and says he got along with Vince well. He also says
himself & The Undertaker were talented & trusted enough to never have to do a
scripted interview, and it was all from themselves. Percy says there was only
one time when he butted heads & disagreed with Russo, which was when The
Oddities debuted in Chattanooga, TN -- telling Vince that "he just slapped
everybody in the locker room in the face." Percy then said that he wouldn't
still be around if it wasn't for his beliefs, so Vince can feel the same way.
The Big Mosh brought up the WWE "Funeral Parlor" vignettes/interview segments,
and said he would've loved to see a blooper reel from them, (such as SummerSlam
'89 when the SS logo banner fell backstage & "Mean" Gene Okerlund having a few
choice swear words). Percy says it would've been great, had it happened -- and
again says that none of those were scripted either, except for a few key things,
like locking The Ultimate Warrior in a casket. Percy then says he'll never
forget when he had "The Immortal" Hulk Hogan & "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair on his
Funeral Parlor segment at the exact same time -- saying that there was nowhere
else he could go in his career from there, except down. Percy then said that
there are tons of stories that he can tell from his time/era -- unlike the
wrestlers of today, who just "go back to their hotel rooms and play Nintendo."
The Big Mosh then mentioned WWE Legends contracts, and if they're worth it or
not financially or creatively. Percy said that it was a "win-win situation" for
him -- in that there was nothing for him to lose. He also mentioned that he gets
a cut of the profit from anything he's ever done, which will include The
Undertaker's WWE "Tombstone" DVD, the WrestleMania DVD Box Set, and the upcoming
Jakks Pacific Series 9 Paul Bearer Classic Superstars action figure (coming
soon).
The Big Mosh went into another of Percy Pringle's latest ventures -- being the
shoot interview DVD put out by Ring Of Honor. He mentions that the DVD out now
(Part I) is pre-WWE, while Part 2 will be his time as Paul Bearer in the WWE
until the present time, and Part III will be him & fellow legendary wrestling
manager, Jim Cornette talking wrestling. Darren mentioned that if Bobby "The
Brain" Heenan were thrown in the mix that it would be as good as gold. Percy
then went on to say that he is honored to have one of his heroes, in Bobby
Heenan, become one of his closest friends.
Other highlights from the fantastic 45-minute interview include: in-depth
discussion about the rise of how Percy & The Undertaker came across Kane while
he was still in Ohio Valley Wrestling (and where he thinks Kane's character will
go from here & Kane has evolved from 1997-2005, upcoming events that Percy is
going appearing on, and his new Gulf South Wrestling wrestling
promotion(www.gulfsouthwrestling.com)
