This week's GIR Radio interview featured Dustin
Rhodes, known to wrestling fans as Goldust. Dustin discusses his recent release
from WWE, possibly coming to NWA TNA, a new gimmick and so much more! You can
listen yourself at www.getinthering.tv and every Sunday 540 AM WLIE @ 7pm in NY/NJ, and live off www.getinthering.tv
- Dustin Rhodes joins the show right away. Sir Adam
mentions that Dustin has never been on Get in the Ring before. Dustin asks Sir
Adam why he hasn't given him a call in the past. The Phantom jokes and said it
was hard to get his number since he was listed under Goldust.
- Sir Adam brings up how the Royal Rumble took
place this past Sunday and how Dustin made his return to the WWE two years ago
in the Rumble. Sir Adam asks Dustin if he was just brought in for a one-shot
deal because he impressed a lot of people that night. Dustin said many WWE
officials were watching closely and seeing how Goldust could fair in the match.
Dustin said he bumped his ass off that night and didn't plan on doing so. The
Phantom brought up how the late Curt Hennig also returned at that same Rumble
and they both ended up getting deals with WWE soon after. Sir Adam mentioned how
despite a lot of new/young guys in the match, Dustin came in and wrestled better
than most of them. Dustin appreciated the comments and said although the Rhodes
family isn't known for their muscles, he did his best to get in shape for the
match so he could last 20-25 minutes.
- The Phantom asked Dustin if he could see his
release from WWE coming. Dustin said he didn't see the release coming because he
hurt his elbow overseas in Australia and was out because of it for a while.
Dustin said when he came back, his elbow still wasn't ready. He mentioned he
wasn't being a wimp about it, but said this was the first time he injured his
elbow this bad so he was doing all he could to improve it. Dustin said that when
he came back to start the angle with Lance Storm, WWE officials continued to ask
if the doctors cleared him to wrestle. He told the officials no and took another
four weeks off and when he returned, he was informed he would be let go because
the creative department in WWE had nothing for him.
- The Phantom mentioned Dustin's appearance on
Howard Stern and how they continue to talk about him to this day on the show.
Phantom wondered why WWE didn't capitalize on that more. Dustin wondered why
they didn't as well. He joked and said they could have ran for Mayor of New York
with his popularity. Sir Adam brings up how WWE plugs wrestlers all the time on
smaller shows, while Dustin was on Howard Stern, one of the biggest shows today,
and yet they didn't capitalize on that. Dustin said there are a lot of politics
going on "up there", but said he has no hard feelings towards them because they
gave him two solid years.
- Sir Adam brings up how Dustin will be teaming up
with his dad, Dusty Rhodes, very soon. Dustin said he spoke with Jeff Jarrett
last week about coming in with his dad to NWA TNA in Nashville. Dustin mentioned
how he is working in Florida at the moment and Japan very soon. Sir Adam says it
will be a cool thing for wrestling to see him team up with his dad in the
future. Dustin mentioned he has tagged many times in the past with his dad, but
said the thing he wants to do the most is face him one-on-one. He said it would
spark a lot of interest in wrestling with old school or new school fans. Dustin
said he always talks to his dad about doing a one-on-one match, but Dusty
refuses each time. He said it is most likely a pride issue.
- The Phantom mentioned that Dusty was on Get in
the Ring last week and asked if his release from WWE and Dusty possibly getting
Vince McMahon to publish his book has a correlation or not. Dustin said he isn't
in Dusty or Vince's head so he doesn't know. He said it might have had something
to do with it, but he doubts it.
- A caller comes on the show and asks Dustin if he
was all for the Goldust gimmick at first or if Vince had to do a lot of
convincing. Dustin said he didn't have a problem with it when Vince ran it by
him and said it was a very edgy thing to do at the time. The caller asks if it
was Vince Russo's idea. Dustin said he wasn't sure, but said it was nice to get
out of his dad's shadow with the character. He said he has a new character up
his sleeve that he may use in TNA if he can come to an agreement with the
company. The Phantom brings up how Dusty said he should just be plain old
Dustin. He said he will always be Dustin, but may try something different soon.
- The Phantom asked if there was any truth to the
rumor that Scott Hall refused to wrestle him in the WWF/WWE. Dustin said there
was a conflict between the two in the early Goldust days. He mentioned how the
Kliq was around then and how a lot of groups were forming backstage, which
started a lot of politics in turn. Dustin said he never really knew what Scott
felt, but said it was eventually worked out.
- Talk turns to new wrestlers on the WWE roster.
Dustin said there is a lot that have potential, but then there are others who
are good looking with big muscles that don't know what the hell they are doing.
He said it is almost pathetic that they can't even come up with something for
him in the creative end of the company and he actually knows what he is doing.
Sir Adam asks if you have to be a big muscle man to succeed in wrestling today.
Dustin says today, it almost matters more then how they can work in the
ring.
- The Phantom asks if there is any groups backstage
right now in WWE. Dustin said he wouldn't know since he hasn't been around for
4-6 months. Sir Adam brings up Shawn Michaels and how he has been famous for
playing the politic card many years ago, but now he is a completely different
person. Dustin said Shawn is awesome and one of the greatest workers of all
time.
- Sir Adam brings up how when Dustin went to WCW, they
teased he would become a new character called Seven, but it didn't quite work
out as planned. Dustin said he wanted to try something new in WCW, but it was
more his fault it didn't get played out more. Sir Adam asked what the character
was suppose to be. Dustin said it was planned to be more of a stalker type
angle, but didn't get played out since other things became more important in the
company at the time. He mentioned that himself and his dad came up with the
Seven gimmick. The Phantom mentioned how it sounded a lot like DDP's character
when he debuted in WWE to feud with The Undertaker.
- Dustin then said he had something on his mind
that he wanted to get out. He said he would still be the "Lonestar" Dustin
Rhodes in certain places, but had an idea for a new gimmick. Dustin used an
example of how rock stars start out in small venues and then they make it big
and get a gold record. Dustin said he has done Goldust and that character has
now been put on the shelf. He continued using the rock star example, saying his
gold record is on his wall, but he keeps going everywhere around the world and
continuing his success and pretty soon...that record goes Platinum. Dustin said
in a sense, Goldust has just gone Platinum.
- The Phantom mentioned how a few years back,
Dustin did an angle where he put his Goldust attire in the trash and burned it.
Dustin said he has 20 of those outfits so it wasn't a big deal. Phantom wondered
if they were trying a new character with him in the WWE. Dustin said at the time
it looked that way, but it never materialized. He said the Goldust character
could have only gone so far so they were looking to try something new.
- Talk turned how the Goldust character was
involved in many segments, but was never apart of a major thing. Dustin said he
really didn't understand that because other guys with there real name got
pushes, but he didn't. He said the only difference was that he had paint on his
face. Phantom asked Dustin if he enjoyed doing the "Crocodile Hunter" segments.
Dustin said they were fun because he did them with Booker T. He said he took the
Goldust character to a new level when they teamed him up with Booker. Sir Adam
asked if he was friends with Booker before they were paired up. Dustin said it
was more of a thing where they tried them out together and since they got a
great reaction from the crowd, they ended up doing more as the weeks went by. He
said he had great chemistry with Booker and how they did some really
entertaining segments every week. Dustin said he was confused when they decided
to kill the angle. He said he still talks to Booker from time to time.
- Dustin then talked about how booking in WWE is a
week by week thing now. He said they basically try things out and if they work,
they go from there. Dustin said it is ridiculous how they can't plan out
storylines for months and months ahead, with the exception of the main event
scene.
- The Phantom mentioned how Sean Waltman was on Get
in the Ring before and said how most of those on the writing team in WWE don't
understand the wrestling business. Dustin said he agrees in a sense that the
writers should have been on the road with the talent to understand what was not
only going on at the TV tapings, but also the House Shows as well. He said if
the talent was on the road for 150 days, the writers should have at least come
to 100 of them.
- The Phantom still wonders why the creative team
in WWE simply told Dustin they had nothing for him. Dustin said he still wonders
that as well. He asks Phantom and Sir Adam if there are any rumors going around
about his release. They both say the funny thing is that not much is out right
now about the situation. Dustin said he wants to know about some rumors going
around right now. Sir Adam mentions that a majority of the rumors going around
is that not many people don't like Triple H backstage right now. Dustin said he
wasn't extremely good friends with Hunter, but he got along with him. Phantom
asks Dustin if it was weird with his ex-wife Terri backstage at the shows.
Dustin said right now they have a good relationship and joked about it on Howard
Stern. Phantom asked about the plane flight from hell. Dustin said he sang to
Terri and it annoyed those on the plane who were trying to sleep. He mentioned
he got a hefty fine for the incident, but didn't lose his job like Curt Hennig
did. Phantom asked if the internet made it worse than it really was. Dustin
agreed and said that type of thing goes down on the internet all the time. Sir
Adam asks how people actually know the truth and asks if one of the wrestlers
leak the information out. Dustin said he doesn't speak to people on the
internet, but he is sure many others do.
