Tommy Fierro's Fanslam event today in Totowa, New Jersey was an absolute success with an estimated 600 + attending the convention. Appearing in a special signing and Question and Answer Session were Kevin Von Erich (making his first Northeastern appearance in at least a decade), Bobby Heenan, Crowbar, Ricky Steamboat, Gary Michael Cappetta, Paul Orndorff, and JJ Dillon.

Others in attendance at the convention were Total Wrestling editor Bill Apter (moderator of the Q & A Session), Johnny Valiant, Scott Chong of Tough Enough 3, Ox Baker, Justin Credible, Dixie and Lit from Special K, The Dirty Rotten Scoundrelz, Judas Young, Miss Kara, Inferno, and a lot of other Northeastern independent performers and promotions. Paul Hough, director of "The Backyard" documentary was in attendance promoting the film as it opens in nearby New York on August 29th. Hough was kind enough to sign 10 promotional posters for the film, which will be giving away here on the site this week.

The convention's strengths included the rarity of seeing certain performers in person, as Steamboat, Von Erich, and Orndorff received the most attention as well as a huge selection of different dealers selling merchandise ranging from RF Videos to Japanese merchandise to King Kong Bundy comic books. All of the guests took time out to talk and share stories with the fans on a one-on-one basis, even before the Q & A Session.

Weaknesses to the convention, which Fierro hopes to improve on, were disorganization in the autograph room which led to no more than six different lines in one confined space. While no one was complaining, it would have theoretically worked easier if Superticket holders (paying $75 for Polaroids and autographed pictures with all the guests) were accommodated first to make a round across the room as they are getting everyone, and then bringing in the next series of convention goers, in order to move the flow of the convention along.

To Fierro's credit, he booked more time in the hotel and pushed the Q & A Session back to ensure everyone got their signatures and photos. Even as the room was being set up for the Q & A Session, Paul Orndorff was signing and taking his final photos.

The only other complaint I heard was lack of space in the dealer room with so many in one space and so many fans jammed into the room, which given the fact that many more fans attended than estimated, is actually a positive when you think about it.

Highlights of the Q & A Session, which was taped by www.RFVideo.com included Bobby Heenan's version of Paul Orndorff trouncing Vader in the their WCW locker room fight, Ricky Steamboat explaining the differences between Randy Savage and Ric Flair as in-ring performers, and Kevin Von Erich discussing life after the wrestling business.
