Welcome one and all to the WCW Worldwide Classics report for 31/07/03 as seen on SKY SPORTS 1 in the UK.

Originally shown 2nd of March 1991, one week after the WrestleWar '91 PPV, although you would never had known judging by the lack of reference to it on this show.

Show opens with clips from a match taped at a house show between Barry Windham and Ron Simmons of Doom.

Host Tony Schiavone and Gordon Solie welcome us to the show and announce that the Fabulous Freebirds have defeated Doom at the WrestleWar PPV (more on this later), they plug the US Title match between Lex Luger vs Sid Vicious as our main event this week then they discuss the big split of Doom.

We are then shown a much longer version of the opening clip, complete with added commentary from Jim Ross. A bloodied Barry Windham is being pounded in the corner by Ron Simmons. The Horsemen and Butch Reed have been barred from ringside but Teddy Long was allowed to stay but was handcuffed to the bottom rope. Simmons whips Windham into the corner but Barry charges back with a Flying Lariat, However Simmons ducks and the ref takes the blow instead. Simmons goes for a charge but Windham drops down and Simmons goes through the ropes to the outside where he is beaten on with a briefcase(!) and is slammed into the railings. Back in the ring and Windham hits a Powerslam then executes a Superplex on Simmons and goes for the cover but there is no ref. Butch Reed hits the ring and beats on Windham. Simmons then holds Windham for Reed, who wraps his belt around his fist. As expected, Windham ducks, Simmons gets clocked, the ref recovers and Windham gets the win. Long and Doom have words so Reed and Long leave but Simmons isn't done and grabs hold of "Old Peanut Head" - yes, JR actually called him that - which brings Reed back to kick the bejesus out of his now estranged partner. Reed then holds Simmons down as Long whips away on his back with the belt, each hit is punctuated with a bleep (for the language) which is actually quite funny to watch. Pretty conclusive evidence that Doom were finished as a team.

Solie & Schiavone tell us we will hear from Ron Simmons on The Danger Zone, with Paul E. Dangerously.

Promo from Dangerous Dan Spivey who is back in WCW for a title shot. Isn't everyone? Oh and his Modus Operandi is dishing out pain.

Junkyard Dog, Tommy Rich & Ricky Morton vs Bill Ford, Greg Sawyer & Randy Starr. I never understood the need for 6 Man Tag belts. I guess they were created in the 80's for Dusty Rhodes and the Road Warriors to hold some gold whilst the real belts were on the Horsemen. The champs are sans gold here and they didn't have them at the PPV either so perhaps the belts were still being made. Promo from the champs with JYD doing all the talking, basically offering anyone to "come on down". The crowd are actually chanting for JYD here. Quite a fast paced affair and even the Dog is somewhat animated. Another continuity screw up here - JYD has a head of hair but at the PPV which aired a week before this show, he was bald! Morton opens up with Sawyer, chucks him around a bit then Rich is tagged in as is Ford and they lock up. JYD in and he and Rich double team before Ford nearly decapitates himself bumping off a JYD clothesline. The Dog then does that stupid crawling headbutt bit. Starr tags in as Solie informs us of a WCW Supershow PPV from the Egg Dome in Japan on April 7th 1991. More quick tags between the champs until JYD puts Sawyer away with his Big Thump Powerslam.

Sting vs Dr. X. How great it must have been to be a WCW wrestler in those days - Just give him a mask and call him Dr. X. Tony and Gordon mark out for Sting's new jacket which has his image painted on the back a'la Ravishing Rick Rude's tights circa 1989. Dr. X jumps Sting before the bell as he tries to remove the jacket. Curse that jacket. Promo from Sting and El Gigante who is once again announced as being 7' 8" tall by Schiavone and thankfully Sting does all the talking, telling World Champ Ric Flair that he has both Sting and the giant on his tail for the World Title. Dr. X gets a load of offence in until Sting starts fighting back with kicks and chops. Sting tries to remove the mask but Dr. X won't let him. Back body drop is followed by a Stinger Splash and the inevitable Scorpion Deathlock for a very popular win.

Promo from Barry Windham. Apparently the future Blackjack Jr. has had enough and he is serving notice to any champion in WCW that he wants some gold. Windham tells us he is now a lone wolf in WCW and even warns members of the Horsemen, Flair and Arn Anderson that nobody is safe from his challenges.

The Steiner Brothers vs Lou Fabianno & Keith Hart (No relation). Promo from the Fabulous Freebirds who wont he tag belts at WrestleWar and are welcoming a challenge from The Steiners. Okay, here's the deal - the 'Birds did win the World Tag Titles from Doom at the PPV on Feb 24th 1991. However, on Feb 18th 1991 - 6 days earlier - The Freebirds dropped the titles to the Steiners at a TV taping. That's right - fans at the tapings saw the 'Birds lose the titles they hadn't officially won yet. That match then aired on March 9th so we could see that match next week, if it was for the Worldwide tapings. Another huge flaw in the WCW advance TV tapings system. To this match and Scott starts with Fabianno and destroys the big guy. Rick is tagged in and he drops an elbow onto Fabianno as he is held across Scott's shoulders. Hart is tagged in and Rick hits an inverted Powerslam (Hart is facing the other way so he goes face first into the mat and not back first) then for some reason starts elbow dropping empty canvas until Scott points out where his opponent is. Hart is then placed on the top turnbuckle where Rick pushes him upwards then back drops him from a great height to the mat. Ouch! Scott tags back in and one Frankensteiner later this match is over.

We then go to The Danger Zone with Paul E. Dangerously and his guest is former Doom member Ron Simmons. Paul E. starts by telling Simmons he's confused as to who Simmons blames for the Doom break up but Ron cuts him off and says that Butch Reed and Teddy Long are definitely the culpable party. Simmons says it was their actions who caused the break up. Ron then says he lets his actions in the ring speak for him and tells us that he was all business whilst Long and Reed were about partying and relaxing. The crowd applauded Simmons babyface act here. Paul E. then explains to Simmons that he is just one third of Doom and they other two thirds (Long and Reed) makes all the difference. Simmons says this his "one third" will make a hole in Doom and Reed's 17 years in the business means nothing because Simmons means business. He concludes by saying "Doom is done!". Paul E wraps this up by wishing Simmons good luck because he'll need it.

The Z-Man vs Joey Maggs. A few years later, WCW assigned Maggs to Teddy Long and had a very brief run as a glorified babyface jobber as "Jumpin' Joey Maggs". Lock up and they trade wristlocks until Maggs takes Zenk down with a pull of the hair which angers the Z-Man. Lock up again and Zenk gets the advantage off a shoulder block and a hip toss. Alexandra York decides to show her face at ringside, taking notes on her portable computer, causing a distraction to Z-Man. Maggs offers Zenk the handshake which is accepted, although Maggs tries to get a sneaky kick in but the Z-Man is too quick, catches the foot, spins Maggs around and floors him with a clothesline. Maggs gets a bit of offence in but Zenk fires back with a back body drop and a drop-kick. Zenk then gets the pin with a Missile Drop-kick. As soon as the end of match bell rings Terry Taylor runs in and attacks Zenk, laying him out with the Five Arms flying forearm before he and York take their leave.

Tony and Gordon talk about Sid Vicious' penchant for sending his opponents away on a stretcher and whether Lex Luger will be his next victim. They then introduce promos from Sid and Luger for the upcoming match. On the bottom of the screen are the stats for each man (height, weight, etc.), as well as the "challenger" and "champion" monikers, so they are taking this title match seriously.

WCW US Title Match - Lex Luger vs Sid Vicious. Fans are well behind Luger here. Stare down ends with Luger shoving Sid then a really horrible lock up that goes nowhere. Sid goes to the outside to jawjack with the fans. Lock up and they break in the corner. Another lock up and Sid gets a cheap shot in then kicks away at Luger. Sid whips Luger into the corner, charges but Luger moves and score two with a Schoolboy roll up. Sid then shoves referee Nick Patrick for making the count so Luger Schoolboys him again for two. Solie says that the marquee says wrestling so the wrestler will win this match. I'd agree, if there was a wrestler in this match. Sid asks for a test of strength and as we wait to see if Luger will oblige, Tony tells us we have to take a break but instead we go to a promo from Nature Boy Buddy Landell, who claims Ted Turner and Jim Herd asked Landell for advice on how to improve WCW's ratings and his solution was more Buddy Landell on TV. He then rants on all the WCW champs including the "new world champs" The Steiners (remember that match hadn't aired yet) and he rags on Ric Flair for calling himself the Nature Boy.

The US Title match resumes with Sid whipping Luger into the ropes and Luger hitting a cross body then he applies a wristlock. Sid forces Luger back into the corner and pounds away on the US Champ. Sid goes to slam Luger's head into the turnbuckle but Lex blocks it and it's Sid's head who hits the pads but he fights back and takes Luger down with possibly the ugliest snap mare I've ever seen but Lex rolls through into a leg scissors headlock which Sid nips out of (impressive for a 6'8 guy) and floors Luger with a clothesline. Sid drops Lex throat first across the top rope than chokes him out on the rope. Solie talks about Luger's conditioning when the guy was clearly blown up at this point. Powerslam by Sid gets two then the US champ is thrown to the outside. Sid comes off the apron with a Double Axe Handle blow then rams Luger's spine into the guard-rail. Back in the ring and Sid hits a neckbreaker for a two count. Sid throws Luger through the ropes but Lex climbs straight back in and starts hulking up. Sid kicks Lex in the gut but he no sells it and flexes again, causing Sid to stand there gawping like an idiot. Luger fires back with some right hands and a big body slam and a vertical suplex for a two count. Sid is whipped off the ropes and is sent to the canvas from a reverse elbow. Sid rolls to the outside and Luger follows, ramming Sid into the guard-rail then posts him. Luger makes it back into the ring just as the 10 count was called, giving Luger the win via count-out. Sid however wasn't standing for this and jumped Luger laying him out. As the crowd chanted "We want Sting", Sid called for the stretcher, causing Tony to freak out. Sid goes for the Powerbomb but Luger back drops his way out of it then clotheslines Sid out of the ring and onto the stretcher which leaves Sid incensed as the show comes to a close.

Bottom Line: Mundane show this week, mostly due to the fact the fall out from the WrestleWar PPV couldn't be addressed due to the erratic and flawed TV taping system, the only notable exception being the break-up of Doom. Things that needed to be covered were Nikita Koloff's return to WCW and his attack on Lex Luger and the condition of Brian Pillman after Sid nearly broke his neck (literally) during the War Games match.

I know I might go on about the problems arising from the TV tapings system a lot (and apologies if it is becoming a bore for any readers) but it really can't be ignored as it affects so much of the product, especially the title changes, as demonstrated by the Freebirds/Steiners farce.

Match wise, nothing was really outstanding although by default it would be the US Title match purely for the name value of Sid vs Luger which was pretty big for the time. Work rate wise it wasn't much as expected but the great crowd heat made it watchable. It was great to see Paul Heyman on TV again. Even back then he was a star on the mic. Hey Vince how about bringing Heyman back on WWE TV? Or better still give him the book for Smackdown?

Hopefully next week we'll have the WrestleWar wrap up and the fabled Steiners vs Freebird tag title match. We may even get our first Worldwide appearance of DDP during that match.

Until next week - thanks for reading.

Cheers
