The Franchise Shane Douglas recently appeared on the Get in the Ring radio program in New York/ New Jersey.  The show is broadcast each week live at 7 pm EST on 540 AM WLIE and at www.wlie.com.  The archived shows are available for one month free of charge at www.getinthering.tv before they are sent to a pay site.

Shane was busy in the backyard with his 2 1/2 year old son and his son's girlfriend.  Sir A says that the boy takes after his dad as he can't believe at 2 1/2 his son has a girlfriend.  Sir A talks about how Franchise told him earlier in the day that he was mowing the lawn and Sir A does an awful impression of Douglas yelling at the lawnmower.  Douglas says doing yard
work is easy for him as it helps him get away from the rigors of getting hit with a chair for a living.  He says the strange part is  when someone sees him doing ordinary things such as grocery shopping or cutting the grass and they look at him like he has three eyeballs.  He is a regular guy like everyone else.  Sir A says that he understands the fans gawking as he was awestruck recently when he saw the brother from Boy Meets World eating in a Mexican restaurant.  Shane believes that is why in the U.S. Madonna is viewed as more important than the President.

He has taken a long time off from the sport and has been playing daddy during that time.  He had to search himself to determine whether at 39 if wanted to go back to wrestling as he has been vocal in the past about guys overstaying their welcome.  However, he believes that the Franchise character still has something to say and that he still has fire in his belly and a passion for the sport.   He believes NWA TNA is loaded with talent and enjoys being there.

The talk turns to the rumors of him getting the WCW world title before it went out of business.  He believed that the titles he held were worth more when he passed them on then when he got them.  Shane talks about Ric Flair's comments on Confidential that it is an honor to hold a title as it is a stamp of approval by both the boys and the company.  Sir A says this is the first time he's ever heard Shane mention Flair without insulting him.  Shane laughs.

Shane wishes that WCW would have listened to his advice or anyone's advice for that matter.  He knew it was time for the company to move to the next generation and they failed to do so.  Nothing against Flair or Hogan but we all saw what happened when it was time for Hogan to pass the torch to Jeff Jarrett.  He finds it hypocritical  that Hogan did this as he has said that Andre did an honorable thing when Andre passed the torch to him.

After a question from a caller about the legal status of the ECW name Shane "thanks" the US Bankruptcy Court for failing to give any money to the ECW wrestlers who were allegedly owed money.  Shane's lawyers wrote a brief to the court laying out his claims and could not believe that there was no response from the court even just to say we're sorry mr. douglas but ....  He says this is another example of the big guy getting taken care of and the little guy getting screwed.  He got the short end of the stick after getting screwed out of money by Paul Heyman.

The talk turns to unionization of the wrestlers and Shane wonders how baseball/football ever unionized.  Shane says there is no protection for the boys if they get hurt performing a stunt or because of negligence.  Sir A sticks up for Vince saying that he has taken care of many people in the past citing Droz as an example of someone who was seriously injured and is apparently still on the WWE payroll.   Douglas agrees that promoters have taken care of certain wrestlers but in the last 20 years he believes the numbers are grossly unfavorable to the promoters.   He finds it odd that wrestlers are treated as independent contractors.  There are 21 criteria in Pennsylvania in order to be classified an independent contractor and one of them is that the person is in control of his/her own schedule.  Shane challenges Sir Adam to name a guy truly in charge of schedule who can say ill go to raw this week and not next week.  Sir A cites the Ultimate Warrior.   Shane doesn't believe that things will change because without wrestling a lot of guys would be digging ditches or something so they will stick with wrestling as bad as can be at times.  He says that the income made by the WWE compared to the NFL is staggering when you look at the number of players in the NFL and that the WWE has only about 60 wrestlers.  He just believes they should get a fair sum not a billion dollars.

Shane's toughest opponent was Tazz.   He loves Tazz as an announcer but also misses seeing him in the ring.  Sabu is a close second.  He thinks Tazz has worked very hard and recalls the first time Tazz got the mic in ECW.  He would always give Shane a hard time saying all he did was cuss and then he went out there and in his  first sentence used the f word about 6 times.

They talk about the first WCW show in the Nassau Coliseum in the late 1980's and Sir A recalls buying a lame yellow headband that said "Shane".  He says that WCW had the worst merchandise ever. Shane recalls that during the Great American Bash tour he and Johnny Ace had a deal where they got 1/3 each of the merchandise revenue and the company got the other third.  He recalls that he Tom Zenk, Brian Pillman and Johnny Ace would show at the house shows early and sign autographs and merchandise all day.  He would see tons of bandanas and T-shirts with the dynamic dudes on them and he thought he would get a lot of money.  When he called home one day his mother said a merchandise check arrived for 698.  He said $698 and was shocked to learn it was for $6.98.

On backyard wrestling, he admires their passion but he doesn't want his own kids going out there emulating people to impress their friends while risking paralysis and even death.  He trained for 2 1/2 years to learn to fall and protect himself.  He would hate to be a parent who gets a phone call that their kids jumped off a roof to impress some friends and got hurt.

He loves wrestling in NY and believes that NWA TNA is looking to run live events  and NY is an area they're interested in running in.  He talks about revenue streams and Sir A explains that he and the Phantom aren't good businessmen as they have never figured out how to make any money in wrestling.

They talk about his recent match with CM Punk which is the type of situation which Shane loves. He wants to help young guys take their energy and raw talent and focus it to hone their skills to transform them into great talent like Steamboat and Flair.   he believes AJ Styles and Trinity are future stars.  He has always been a mark for the work of Ricky Steamboat, Barry Windham and Brad Armstrong.

This week Paul Ellering.  Next week Mick Foley returns home to GIR after a 12 year absence!!
