HAYABUSA LEAVES HOSPITAL UNDER OWN POWER

In the next chapter of what will hopefully eventually become a happy ending, Japanese star Hayabusa was able to leave the hospital he was undergoing therapy under his own power assisted by crutches on 3/31.

It had been exactly 525 days since Hayabusa was injured and paralyzed during a match with Mammoth Sasaki at the FMW PPV at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo on 10/20/01. Hayabusa was attempting a quebrada (also known as Chris Jericho's Lionsault) apparently slipped as he shot off the ropes, landing on his head in the ring. FMW announced soon afterward that Hayabusa had been paralyzed from the neck down due to a cervical vertebrae injury.

Hayabusa began an intensive physical therapeutic rehabilitation immediately. In March of 2003, he was finally able to begin walking stairs and began walking with crutches on 3/14. Hayabusa is scheduled to appear at the 4/11 WMF promotion event at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo before undergoing a shoulder surgery in May.

Trained by Tarzan Goto, Hayabusa debuted in 1991 under his real name, Eiji Ezaki. In 1994, he debuted the masked Hayabusa (Falcon) character, dressing in pants similar to those Sabu wears. After spending time wrestling in Mexico to hone the gimmick, Hayabusa was chosen as the man who would take Atsushi Onita's place as the top star of FMW as Onita prepared for retirement in 1995 (that retirement didn't last long, but that's another story). At one point, Hayabusa even turned down an offer from New Japan to stay with FMW. He had worked for All Japan starting in 1997.

Prior to the vertebrae injury, Hayabusa had fought back from numerous injuries through the years. He cracked a vertebrae during a 1995 match against Mike Awesome when a Shooting Star press attempt went awry. He was out most of 2000 after elbow surgery on both arms, injuries caused by years of his physical aerial style.

In the wake of Hayabusa's injuries, Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling was left without it's lone remaining top star (others like Masato Tanaka, Gedo, and Jado had already left due to financial issues) and soon filed bankruptcy. FMW owner Shoichi Arai committed suicide in the wake of the promotion folding. FMW booker Kodo Fuyuki went on to form the WEW promotion before passing away due to cancer last month. In recent months, Hayabusa has been doing a figurehead commissioner role for the WMF promotion.

Whether you have seen a Hayabusa match or not, if you were a fan of his or not, I ask that each of you say a prayer for Eiji Ezaki and his family. While today was a major step for them, they still have a long, hard, possibly unending road ahead of them, harder than most of you will even realize, and they need the support.
