The legendary and very funny Ken Patera joined Get in the Ring Radio, as well as long time wrestling journalist Dr. Mike Lano and Jerry Tuite aka Malice. All three talked about the lifestyles of professional wrestlers and the recent rash of injuries. Listen to GIR Sundays at Noon 1240 AM WGBB in NY/NJ as well as at www.getinthering.tv. Here are some highlights:

-The boys catch Patera as he is cleaning his house. Starts to complain about his daughter’s shower and how much hair is clogging up the drain. Says his maid called in sick and the World’s Strongest Man has to clean the house.

-Ken Patera calls Sir Adam and the Phantom “retarded”. He feels that he just goes to funerals nowadays, He was at Curt Hennig’s funeral and saw Brock Lesnar, Harley Race, Animal, and Jesse Ventura. Patera calls Jesse “a freakin nerd, that piece of sh** showed up in a pair of Zubas, a tank top, an old stinky jacket, and a pair of tennis shoes that looked ten years old. Just disgraceful they should have thrown the bum out.” Ken goes on to say that Jesse “Disgraced the profession of wrestling, I was happy for him at first, but he kept putting his foot in his mouth as Governor”.

-Patera wished he never came back to the WWF during his last run. He had three major injuries during that stint. Talks about getting 450 internal injuries for a triceps injury, replaced hip and shoulder, to which Sir Adam asks if he’s feeling better now, Patera yells “I feel like sh**!”. Patera feels that Batista will never be able to recover 100% from his triceps injury. It is one of the worst injuries to come back from. Thinks that Edge and Kurt Angle got their neck injuries for delivering and taking all of those German Suplexes, which was a move Patera refused to let himself get into.

-Talk turns to ESPN’s continuous run of the World’s Strongest Man circa 1977 when Patera won. Phantom hopes Patera gets money for each rerun of the competition, to which Ken Patera replies “I haven’t got a damn dime from anybody for doing anything..And I’m not even upset!” Patera resides in a split-level house.

-Says he still has 4 residual checks from the WWF for Ken Patera merchandise. He claims that all four checks wouldn’t add up to 25 dollars.

-Dr. Mike Lano joins the discussion and points to the use of pain pills as cause for the recent rash of injuries. Lano believes that somas contributed to Curt Hennig’s death, and called him a “bump master” who needed relief from pain. Feels that like in Japan, WWE should let their wrestlers have some time off not only for recovery from injuries. Gives an example of Davey Boy Smith’s “Daily Cocktail” Steroids, Pain Pills, and Somas.

-Lano believes that steroid use is worse now then it was 10 years ago, “the guys have gone into high tech drugs that can’t be detected. They’ve gone way beyond HGH (human growth hormone)..now the guys put pressure on themselves to have the look”.

-Lano is actually a dentist who works on wrestlers such as Hawk, Mick Foley, Sabu, Abdullah The Butcher just to name a few.

-Jerry Tuite joined the show, and talked about his WCW stint as the Wall, “I was thrown to the dogs early”. “A lot of the guys who were just starting in the Power Plant were put right on Nitro.” When asked about his match against Hulk Hogan, “I wasn’t nervous at all, I knew how that match was going to go judging from watching all his other matches”.

-Tuite is now clean, he had a drug addiction. “In our business there are so many different types of personalities, it’s a shame that the drug use is very frequent. Some guys have some major injuries, have chronic pain, but it becomes habit forming… Some people get hooked.”

-Tuite started taking painkillers “I didn’t have to, if I utilized my chiropractor right, and I took Ibuprophen I could have kept the pain down. You are thrown into that lifestyle, everybody has it and ‘When in Rome’”. Tuite started on painkillers and then found himself addicted to heroin. Even though he’s clean now, he calls it a “constant struggle”. While under a WWE developmental deal, Tuite got into legal problems in New Jersey stemming from his drug abuse. When WWE caught wind of it, he was quickly released. “I got a little slap on the wrist, they (WWE) told me eventually down the road, when things get better give them a call. I have been talking to them recently.”

-On what went wrong with Malice in NWA TNA, Tuite doesn’t want to “heel on Vince Russo. I think he’s a good guy, for the most part I think he concentrates too much on a specific area; the little guys.” Tuite is friends with Jeff Jarrett and has been talking about returning. Russo “was saturating the shows with the X Division. But he’s starting to get away from that now.”
