NEWS:
Bert Prentice's USA Championship Wrestling taped two weeks of TV at their
2/16 Nashville Fairgrounds show before an estimated 275. Quick rundown: Opener
was Patrick Blaine Miller (a regular in Columbia, TN) debuting by beating Lucky
West. Ashley Hudson beat Kory Williams in a battle of former New South tag team
partners after KO'ing Williams with a boomerang. Hudson worked as the heel,
Williams the babyface. Spellbinder beat Ricky Murdoch in a short match,
described as the worst of the night. Spellbinder's look now is said to resemble
Scott Steiner's, although he's nowhere near as massive. Prentice taped a couple
ringside interviews. Bambi & Kevin White beat Leilani Kai & Steve Bragg.
Me Inc. (Mike Rapada & Big Bully Douglas) vs. Hotshots (Chase Stevens &
Cassidy Riley) ended up with no decision announced. The ref was handcuffed
behind his back by the heels, who also handcuffed Riley to the second rope. Nick
Dinsmore & Rob Conway beat Mark Jindrak & Sean O'Haire when Conway
pinned Jindrak. Jindrak and O'Haire started in Nashville after being trained at
the Power Plant before being called up by WCW. Dinsmore and Conway also spent
time in Nashville earlier in their careers. In another match of OVW guys (in for
the weekend because Jim Cornette was down to do commentary), David Flair pinned
Flash with his feet on the ropes. James Storm beat Terry Taylor in a short match
using a sharpshooter. Taylor attacked Storm with a chair afterward. USA champion
Chris Harris beat Larry Zbyszko by DQ when Zbyszko used the title belt. Main
event was Doug Gilbert vs. Brian Christopher. Gilbert, the heel, before the
match produced a contract saying the loser must leave Nashville for one year. He
called Cornette into the ring to preside over the contract signing, and Cornette,
who is a heel here too, said it would be a honor. Christopher came out, and it
ended up with Gilbert tossing powder in Brian's face to start the match.
Cornette said the contract was indeed valid. Christopher had Gilbert beat after
the hip hop drop but David Flair ran in and attacked Christopher. Match was
ruled a no contest. Afterward Gilbert on the mic said there were two great
wrestling families, the Gilberts and the Flairs.
Prentice ran the previous night in Lebanon, TN. Crowd was estimated at 60.
Five match show was topped by Harris & Stevens beat Me Inc. Rapada is now
doing a Billy Travis gimmick singing before all his matches. Heels got their
heat on Stevens the whole way before the hot tag to Harris. Stevens pinned
Douglas to win with a sunset flip. Jindrak & O'Haire beat Dinsmore &
Conway in a good match. Jindrak reportedly looked better than O'Haire here and
showed good fire. Dinsmore and Conway were about to win, but Jindrak pulled the
ref out. O'Haire then superkicked Conway and pinned him. They brawled afterward,
with the babyfaces laying out the heels with a double stunner. Storm beat Flash
by reverse decision when Flash was caught with a chain after pinning Storm.
Maryland Championship Wrestling switched their heavyweight title again, and
once again it didn't change hands in Maryland. Bruiser became a five-time MCW
champion beating Orlando Jordan at their 2/16 show in Harrington, DE, at Exhibit
Hall at the Delaware State Fairgrounds. Jordan had won the title seven days
earlier in Lexington, KY, on a South Eastern Championship Wrestling show from
Bruiser. Headbanger Mosh (Chaz of Lo-Down) returned. His WWF contract recently
expired and he is now back to working indies. He beat a guy named Genesis,
billed as the "hired hitman" of the Holy Rollers. Red and the Maximos
were on the show. Red beat Romeo Valentino, which in the booking scheme here is
an upset. Candie, who Valentino "won" recently in a match, interfered
to help Red win. Maximos and the Briscoe Brothers were in a three-way won by
Chris Chetti & Danny Doring. Julio Dinero lost to Adam Flash in a match to
determine the number one contender for the heavyweight title. Flash, the current
CZW Iron Man champion, has held the MCW title twice in the past. They did
another one of those matches with a local personality involved (which is
actually a smart thing to do because you can get a good amount of publicity out
of it which theoretically should move tickets; I'm surprised at the relatively
small number of promoters who do it). This time it was Cowboy, a DJ from WZBH,
who teamed with Van Hammer and lost to Chad Bowman & Dino Divine. Christian
York and Joey Matthews, who hold the tag titles here, were also on the show in
an eight-man tag teaming with Ghetto Mafia to beat Holy Rollers &
Supermodels (Marcus Jordan & Doug Delicious).
The 2/13 HWA show in Dayton, OH, drew an estimated 500, which as reported
previously was their best crowd to date running the city. Even though the TV did
not air for two weeks leading into the show, they still had plugs on the local
"Wrestling Guys" radio show, plus they took out cable TV ads during
Raw and Smackdown advertising the names who would be there. There was also an
autograph signing with Maven at one of the ticket outlets the day of the show
that led to a good number of ticket purchases as well.
