NEWS:
Big Bossman will be working his first U.S. independent show since his WWE
contract expired, on 2/28 in Conway, SC for Rob Hochman's Coastal Championship
Wrestling. That's going to be a pretty big show, as they've got Road Dogg, Ron
Killings, Abyss, Simon Diamond, and Tracy Brooks scheduled as well. Bossman will
be working for IWA Japan in March. He did a run-in there on 1/12 in Tokyo,
attacking Steve Williams after a tag match. There is history between Williams
and Bossman, as Bossman, when he worked as Big Bubba Rogers, dropped the old UWF
title to Williams.
New Jack will be joining Slyk Wagner Brown, April Hunter, and Sumie Sakai in
IWA Puerto Rico next weekend. Kevin Kelly is headed down as well to do some
English commentary, although I'm not certain if that's for the proposed
pay-per-view or something else.
Pro Wrestling Guerrilla had the first round of their 16-team tournament to
crown tag team champions on 1/24 in Santa Ana, CA before an estimated 150. As
I've written previously, this is the largest tag tournament to take place over a
single weekend in the U.S. that I can remember. (PCW out of Illinois had a
16-team tournament, but it took place over several shows and weeks.) Reviews
have been positive for the show. Super Dragon & American Dragon had a really
good match with Excalibur & Jonny Storm. I don't know if I've written it,
but I know I've said it to anyone who will listen: American Dragon is AWESOME.
They pretty much ran the gamut in terms of styles you can do in one match here.
The Dragons were heels and got huge heat afterward arguing with fans. Scorpio
Sky, Quicksilver, and Chris Bosh hit the ring and attacked Super Dragon and
Excalibur. Disco Machine made the save with a knife. Dragon & Dragon will
face the Havana Pitbulls (Ricky Reyes & Rocky Romero), who beat Hardkore
Inc., in the second round. That has major potential. Pitbulls over Hardkore Inc.
was actually described as almost a squash, as even with the size difference the
Pitbulls took most of the match. The Thomasellis vs. Sara del Ray & Apollo
Khan was also reportedly a very good match. One of the Ballard Brothers was KO'd
legit during their tag match with Samoa Joe and Puma. The match ended early (it
was the only match to go less than 10:00) as a result. The crowd was taken out
of the show after this. The length of the show probably didn't help that either.
Other first round winners were Bosh & Quicksilver, Joey Ryan & Scott
Lost (who beat M-Dogg 20 & Babi Slymm in another good match), B-Boy &
Homicide, and Chris Hero & C.M. Punk (went over Messiah & Christopher
Daniels). One non-tournament match, Frankie Kazarian defending the PWG title
against Adam Pearce, finished the show. They went to a time limit draw. The
match was announced as a 20:00 limit, but the bell rang after about 16:00. So
they were either shaving time or somebody can't keep track of time. Jardi
Frantz, who was to team with M-Dogg, called and cancelled his booking at the
last minute. He instead worked for APW in Hayward, CA.
