What was the average for a RAW rating with the WWE was winning the "war"
against WCW on Monday nights?
Answer: Prior to the lanch of NITRO, the WWE was drawing ratings in the
low 3's on a consistent basis. When NITRO launched, the two shows both
pulled ratings in the mid 2's for a few months before the audience began to
build and the real back and forth competition began. By early 1996, the
WWE was consistently winning the ratings battle by slight margins. RAW was
pulling low 3's and NITRO high 2's. Things started to change and shift
WCW's way on 5/27/06 with the arrival of Scott Hall. RAW won the ratings
that night 3.3 to 2.8. NITRO won the next week with a 3.0 to 2.3, but RAW
came back the following week on 6/10 to win the ratings with a 2.7 to 2.6.
After Bash at the Beach, and the Hulk Hogan turn and the formation of the nWo,
NITRO took command and ran off a huge string of wins over the next year and a
half, in some cases doubling the rating for RAW. By early 1998 the
audience for both shows had grown to the point that both NITRO and RAW were
consistently pulling ratings of 4.0 or better. By April, the combined
audience was over 10 for the two shows. Wrestling was red hot, and RAW
finally began to take control after the massive publicity of Mike Tyson's
appearance at Wrestlemana. Both shows remained in the mid to high 4's the
rest of that year with some occasional 5's. Near the end of the year, RAW
was consistently drawing ratings above 5, and NITRO was in the low 4's.
That pattern continued for the first few months of 1999, and RAW began seeing
their numbers grow past the 6 mark, while NITRO stayed in the high 3's or low
4's. By April of 1999, the audience had settled and RAW ran off a string
of 6's, and exceeded 7 on 5/24/99 and again on 7/26/99. Meanwhile, NITRO
was losing audience and dipped below 3 with a 2.9 rating on 8/23/99. By
then, the battle was over. Management changes were made at WCW and the
company never recovered.
