Ringside Remembrances: What am I Thankful for…

Jay Shannon draws upon five decades as a devout wrestling fan to look at the past, present and future of pro wrestling.

“For flowers that bloom about our feet.
For tender grass, so fresh, so sweet
For song of bird and hum of bee
For all things fair we hear and see
Father, in Heaven, we thank thee”

–Ralph Waldo Emerson

Here it is, Thanksgiving morning. My girlfriend is still napping in our bed. My little cat is cuddled up next to me and purring to beat the band. I have classic TV running in the background (Hazel). I am happier than I have been for many, many years. Even with a nasty case of the flu, I still feel very blessed. I’d love to share some of the things that I am most Thankful for.

The WWE Network:

Anyone who has read my writings and rants for the past 13 years knows I consider myself a wrestling historian. The Network offers me access to so many hours of nostalgic interviews, actions and events.Add to that, I get to see live events and exclusive shows. Now that I’ve all but eliminted cable the Network gives me so much enjoyment. Plus, it gives Lottie and I fun Date Nights, holding each other and watching the Macho Man, the Hulkster, Georgeous George, the Great Kabuki and so many more. Many of my/our heroes are gone but the Network gives us a chnce to still spend time with them.

Cruiserweight Division:

The big brutes are fun to watch but the 205 Club just takes excitement to new levels. I’ve had the honor to meet and watch guys like Brian Kendrick Jack Evans, the Young Bucks, and T.J. Perkins. It is just so much fun to sit and watch Lottie give out a “Holy Crap” when Cedric Alexander hit a Lumbar Check or someone nails a 450 Splash. I always loved the smaller guys in WCW (Rey Mysterio, Psicosis, etc…). WWE has breathed new life into a dead section of wrestling. Thank you.

Live wrestling shows:

With my former life, I had pretty much stopped going to live shows. WIth Lottie, we have enjoyed our first of many shows. We have video of Odwun the Viking slamming Terrific Tyson within inches of my dear Lottie. That is a fun memory that we will always have to share. We have a ton of great friends, now, that we can share. We keep an ear and eye open for local shows to be there to get into the spirit of the live event. Thanks to the Reno Wrestling Federation, All Pro Wrestling and the other locals that keep the world of indy wrestling alive for the next generations.

October began my 14th year with this great site. I’ve met tons of fantastic people, experience the European scene with a trip to Poland, met a milion great wrestlers from the past, present and future. None of this would have been possible if not for Bill Apter and our Fearless Leader (grin). Thank you both for this continued blessing in my life. This year, I was honored to add the love of my life as my co-writer. It gives me new views and impressions of the sport I have loved since i was three years old (cloing in on 50 years now).

In Conclusion:

While 2016 has been a time of severe change in my life, it is been mostly positive changes in my life. Wrestling has been the one constant in my life and it has gotten me through the rough times.

What am I mostly thankful for? You guys who read my rants and recaps, who have walked the path of craziness with me. Those of you who have nelped me to grow as a person and a writer. Bless you all…
