TV giant takes on brand new role in the pro wrestling ring and vows to bring it back to terrestrial television!

Star of ITV, Mark ‘The Beast’ Labbett, is about to use his enormous stature to boss around a different kind of contestant than those he normally battles on global television franchise ‘The Chase’. This time, the 27 stone ‘Beast’ will be focusing on British wrestling’s new generation of home grown competitors, as he today revealed his brand new role as Executive Producer of the UK’s most globally televised wrestling brand NGW.

“I’ve been a fan of professional wrestling for most of my life,” Labbett explained. “In fact, much of what I do on ‘The Chase’ has been inspired by wrestling bad guys. We all know the success of American wrestling brands like the WWE. Yet, I believe that there has never been a better time for British wrestling to return back to its proud home for 33 years consecutively – that being terrestrial television in Great Britain.

Whilst New Generation Wrestling has its ‘NGW British Wrestling Weekly’ programme broadcast in some 36 countries globally, it is still yet to air on a mainstream TV UK channel. This is despite being a runaway success on the government’s local TV initiative, aired in the traditional 4pm Saturday afternoon slot which older fans will remember fondly from ITV’s World of Sport. The show’s producer and former British heavyweight champion, Alex Shane, explains why the addition of Mark Labbett as NGW Executive Producer is so important for the booming UK wrestling industry. “There is no question that Mark is one of the most recognisable faces on television today, not just in the UK, but globally thanks to ‘The Chase USA’ and ‘The Chase Australia’. That type of television clout and list of connections is the vital ingredient British wrestling has needed to get the attention of key decision makers in UK television.”

“I will bring British Wrestling back to mainstream terrestrial television”

Yet it’s not just TV contacts and connections that Mark Labbett plans to utilize in order to help resurrect that once mighty UK TV giant of British wrestling. He also intends to be far more ‘hands on’ too.  Labbett continued “I think that it is crucially important British wrestling presents a very separate product from what we see in America. I believe that the very best way to do this is to put much more focus on the rules of British wrestling. If that means I have to be physically involved in enforcing them, then that’s something I’m willing to do too.”

NGW Undisputed Heavyweight Champion ‘The Showstealer’ Nathan Cruz also sees Labbett’s appointment as NGW Executive Producer to be a game changing moment in British wrestling on television. He said “It’s always been amazing to me that British wrestling has become a worldwide phenomenon over the last few years, with more UK talent under contract to the WWE now than at any other time in history, yet has struggled to get on mainstream television in its own country”. Cruz continued “to have so many fans around the world messaging me to say they just watched me on TV in AmericaCanada, the Middle East and across the rest of Europe, yet to not get that same response here in my home country always seems strange. With Mark Labbett on board pushing NGW to television executives and fighting to bring more traditional British rules back into the game, this really feels like a huge step forward for British wrestling as a whole.
