Crystal Ball: SummerSlam 2014

Jay Shannon draws upon all his predictive skills to pick the winners and losers of an upcoming major wrestling event.

Time for the Summertime Spectacular. There is a nice mix of action, title defenses and vicious grudge matches. Let’s take a look and I’ll do my best to try and sort through this insanity…

Cesaro vs Rob Van Dam

WWE is building Cesaro back up from a small slump. RVD, one of the best competitors in wrestling history, really has nothing to gain by a win. I believe this will be a set up for Cesaro vs Sheamus for the US title. As much as I hate to say it, Cesaro is going to take this one.

Predicted Winner: Cesaro
Predicted Grade: 3.0

Dolph Ziggler vs The Miz
Intercontinental Title Match

I realize that Dolph has beaten Miz, recently. The belt, however, wasn’t on the line. Miz is on a major push, right now. I just don’t see Miz dropping the belt, yet. Miz may well do something underhanded to retain but he will walk out of S-Slam with the Ivory strap over his shoulder.

Predicted Winner: The Miz
Predicted Grade: 3.0 out of a possible 5

Jack Swagger vs Rusev
Flag Match

Yep, this is the match that I called for and got. This one is actually very hard for me to call. My heart is saying to go with Swagger. My knowledge of storylines and business has me leaning towards Rusev. Fan desire would be for Swagger to take the win. The turning point is Swagger is going into the match at less than 100%. What I think is going to happen is Zeb will distract Rusev, which will allow Jack to retrieve the flag and win. After the match, Rusev will crucify Jack, including putting Jack in the Accolade and refusing to release it. Jack may be out for some time, due to being injured but he is going to capture the flag for a victory.

Predicted Winner: Jack Swagger
Predicted Grade: 2.0

A.J. Lee vs Paige
Knockout Title Match

This is definitely a battle of the wacky babes. Paige and Lee have both pulled surprises to get title switch wins, in recent months. There are going to be a lot of close calls. In the end, experience will win out over youth and Lee (who isn’t that much older) will retain her title against the Pale Destructress.

Predicted Winner: A.J. Lee
Predicted Grade: 2.0

Bray Wyatt vs Chris Jericho
(Rowan and Harper are banned from ringside)

Jericho took the first battle in this war. Since this is one of the better feuds in recent history, Jericho simply can’t win again. Bray may appear to be at a disadvantage, without his “brothers”. I think that will just motivate the strange battler. Jericho will come so close. I think he will put Bray in the Walls of Jericho but then the lights are going to go out, as if the other members of the Wyatts were on their way out. When Jericho lets go of the Walls, Bray will sneak attack Chris and plant him with Sister Abigail.

Predicted Winner: Bray Wyatt
Predicted Grade: 3.75

Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins
Lumberjack Match

This one is really a hard one to pick. Both are on semi-pushes but neither man is really going anywhere. I see this one as a possible Bret Hart vs Owen Hart situation. Expect a wild battle, especially with all the Lumberjacks involved. In the end, I really think Dean Ambrose is going to catch Seth with Dirty Deeds and take the win. It won’t, however, by the final time we see Seth Rollins. More on that in a bit.

Predicted Winner: Dean Ambrose
Predicted Grade: 3.0

Randy Orton vs Roman Reigns

Randy is going to be Cannon Fodder for Reigns. Sure, Randy will hit most of his signature moves. In the end, a Superman Punch and a Spear will help Roman move on to being in contention for the WWE World title (or some other title).

Brie Bella vs Stephanie McMahon

This match is just a filler. This will definitely be a Sibling Rivalry match. I realize that Nikki isn’t scheduled to be in the middle of this, but she will be. Nikki will come out with her sister to support her, or so it will seem. Stephanie and Brie will have a mediocre match, at best. Near the end, Nikki will get in the ring and attack her sister. Nikki will then explain that Brie deserted her and put her through Hell and all that kind of stuff. I could eventually see a mixed tag of Nikki/Cena vs Brie and Daniel Bryan.

Predicted Winner: No Contest (due to Nikki’s interference)
Predicted Grade: 1.5

John Cena vs Brock Lesnar
WWE World Title Match

This is going to be violent and possibly bloody. Lesnar is wanting to top his defeat of Undertaker. Cena is determined to retain, despite all the odds. These two are going to tear the house down. I’ve talked with tons of friends about this match, including several rabid Lesnar fans. Most everyone seems to feel that since Lesnar got the huge win at Wrestlemania, he will drop this one to Cena. As for me, my thoughts will see a bloody and beaten Cena barely manage to defeat The Beast. HHH will then send Seth Rollins out to destroy Cena. I really think Seth will successfully Cash In and take the strap. Lesnar gets to go back into semi-retirement. Cena gets time off to finish filming his latest movie. Seth and Dean have a few more matches, before Roman comes after the belt.

Predicted Winners: John Cena then Seth Rollins
Predicted Grade: 4.0

Final Thoughts:

SummerSlam is usually one of the top four shows of the year. They bring out the best of the best. This year, that isn’t exactly the case. The matches are going to be decent but not quite as spectacular as years past. However, I do think the fans are going to enjoy some wild action and some nice plot twists. I have my laptop fully charged and ready to go so that I can check out SummerSlam.
