2014 SUMMERSLAM PREVIEW AND PREDICTIONS

By Marco Cerino

The Biggest Event of the Summer is here! While that also means that summer is pretty much over (and the last week in NYC has felt more like fall) that also means we get the best PPV event of the season. This is a really stacked card and for the first SS to air on the WWE Network this should be a lot of fun. Let’s take a look at the nine matches on the card.

PRE-SHOW: CESARO VS ROB VAN DAM

Is it possible for two guys to steal the show before the show even starts? If they can, this might be that occasion. Last year RVD took on Dean Ambrose for the United States title and almost claimed the belt before the Shield interfered and their guy kept the belt. Two years ago, Cesaro took that same time from Santino Marella in the pre-show. Both guys are in familiar territory and bring contrasting styles to the ring. RVD, the veteran, has the speed and unorthodox offense that could befuddle his opponent. Cesaro has tremendous size and the athleticism to keep up with Van Dam. The Swiss Superman is really strong at matching up with different opponents, part of his expected high ceiling in the WWE. Look for some impressive offensive maneuvers and counters during this exciting match.

PREDICTED WINNER: CESARO

ROMAN REIGNS VS RANDY ORTON

Hollywood loves a big blockbuster and this is a real clash of the titans. For Randy Orton it might feel like the Apex Predator is facing the young Legend Killer he once was. These two hate each other and Orton believes Reigns cost him another crack at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. Reigns has a chance to add another notch to his impressive belt. If the third generation superstar can keep the bigger man grounded and make this a more technical match, he has the edge. Reigns is strong and very athletic. He’ll look for a faster pace and to use his size advantage. He’ll have to limit the openings that Orton can use to counter. Could a Superman Punch or an RKO measure on the Richter scale? We’ll find out Sunday.

PREDICTED WINNER: ROMAN REIGNS

STEPHANIE MCMAHON VS BRIE BELLA

Seemingly this is a mismatch. Brie is a former Divas champion; Stephanie hasn’t been in a match in over a decade. In that absence, she’s been a Supermom to her three daughters as well as Chief Brand Officer to the WWE. However, if we’ve learned anything about the McMahons, it’s that they’re as tough as they are ruthless. Stephanie has masterminded attacks to Brie’s sister Nikki. If she needs help with in-ring technique, her husband the Cerebral Assassin might be able to teach her some things. In the Attitude Era, Stephanie proved capable in the ring. But that was a long time ago. Brie will have to watch for distractions and that signature McMahon mind game. If Brie can extend the match she can use her experience and wear out Stephanie. Might be a good weekend for the Brie and Daniel to call a house sitter to prevent another break-in and spend time in Los Angeles. Will Twin Magic be restored in the WWE?

PREDICTED WINNER: BRIE BELLA (BUT NOT WITHOUT CONTROVERSY)

CHRIS JERICHO VS BRAY WYATT

This will certainly be the sternest test for Bray Wyatt in his WWE career. Last year he defeated Kane in an Inferno Match but that was with the assistance of his Family. In this match he will be without Luke Harper and Erick Rowan. Not to mention he’ll have to face one of the best to ever lace up the boots in Jericho. His accolades are well-known and his gameplan is second to none. Wyatt can certainly counter the athleticism of the veteran but can he match in-ring wits? Jericho has been unfazed by the mysterious Wyatt’s mind games; he may have set off some mental traps of his own. Wyatt enters LA with something to prove while Jericho looks to add to his sterling legacy.

PREDICTED WINNER: BRAY WYATT

FLAG MATCH: RUSEV VS JACK SWAGGER

Before I enter my analysis, I will redress concerns that some may have seen from my @CerinoRoyale Twitter feed. The historian Marco initially had no clue why Zeb Coulter referred to the American flag as “50 stars and 13 bars.” Those words together allude to the Confederate flag, something that has no business in the WWE ring, with all due respect to the Fabulous Freebirds. However, I did some investigating and traced the phrase to the patriotic comedian Cloyd Rivers. Shame on me for questioning your loyalties Zeb.

This may be the best style match-up on the entire card. Amateur wrestling will have sway in this match between the Belorussian fighter and the Oklahoman. This is a great stipulation for those strengths as it requires the victor to claim his flag from the opponent’s corner. Both men have tremendous lower body strength and can keep things grounded. Lock-ups will be intense. Any aerial offense becomes exponentially more risky as any absence from the ring means an opening for the opponent. Lana and Zeb will make an impact at some point. Can the Real Americans at the Staples Center make the difference for Swagger?

PREDICTED WINNER: JACK SWAGGER

LUMBERJACK MATCH: DEAN AMBROSE VS SETH ROLLINS

This has the makings of an instant Summerslam classic. These two ran together in the unstoppable Shield. They’re very similar with size, style, and experience. They know each other so well. Look for a lot of chain wrestling and effective counters. Ambrose made this stipulation so Rollins can’t run or hide from this confrontation. This high-flying offense that Ambrose flaunts could hurt him at points during the match. The key to the lumberjack match is ring awareness. Ambrose has been wanting to get his hands on Rollins so bad he’ll need to keep his cool when the bell rings. Yeah, good luck with that. Expect this match to be something we mention as a launching point for these two daredevils. Rollins will retain his Money In the Bank briefcase regardless of the outcome but both have a lot to gain with this match.

PREDICTED WINNER: DEAN AMBROSE

WWE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH: THE MIZ DEFENDS VS DOLPH ZIGGLER

Still holding that Dolph Ziggler stock? Atta go. Sunday is a big chance for him to validate the hype and reclaim the Intercontinental belt. In a company full of big stars a strong performer like Dolph can fly under the radar. This guy is a wrestling machine and has proven himself. The Miz and he are very similar in look and attitude. The Miz needs to fight at a distance from the grappler. He needs to wrestle a smart match and keep Ziggler reaching. Any weakness can be exploited quickly. Miz has the home-court advantage of wrestling before all his A-list friends and screaming fans in Hollywood, not to mention his smoke show wife. Can he capitalize or will the Show Stealer also take the belt?

PREDICTED WINNER, AND STILL INTERCONTINENTAL CHAMPION: THE MIZ

WWE DIVAS TITLE CHAMPIONSHIP: AJ LEE DEFENDS VS PAIGE

Roses are red

Violets are blue

AJ is crazy

But Paige is too

These two have battled for the title since Paige’s debut the night after Wrestlemania. Both possess excellent in-ring skills and championship tenacity. This match is about the mind games. Paige gained an edge when she pushed AJ off the stage and gave the champion whiplash. AJ will need to use her veteran guile to stay at least one step ahead of the unpredictable Paige. Look for some really innovative offense from the two. The established head diva against the rising ingenue? Yep, must be Hollywood.

PREDICTED WINNER, AND STILL WWE DIVAS CHAMPION: AJ LEE

WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP: JOHN CENA DEFENDS VS BROCK LESNAR

Here’s a fun fact, Sunday night will be the eighth WWE Championship match at Summerslam to involve John Cena in the last ten years. The only year he appeared at Summerslam in a non-title match was 2010 when he headed Team WWE in the 7-on-7 battle with the Nexus, which he won. This is familiar territory for him. Brock Lesnar has won at the last two Summerslams, beating HHH in 2012 and CM Punk in 2013.

Not much has to be said about this match. These two really don’t like each other. Cena has carried the WWE banner since Lesnar first left the company in 2004. Lesnar has wrestled elsewhere and ruled UFC for a time. These two are unreal to watch for their size and athleticism. Lesnar has an extensive amateur background and his MMA experience makes him a matchup nightmare. John Cena has been through it all and has an indomitable spirit. The two had a brutal match after Wrestlemania last year. Lesnar did everything he could to break Cena but failed. We haven’t seen The Beast in the ring since he Beat the Streak. Can he get it done this time?

PREDICTED WINNER, AND NEW WWE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION: BROCK LESNAR

BONUS PREDICTION: WILL WE SEE STING?

If there’s any moment where an epic announcement can elevate a night to legendary status, Sunday night at the Staples Center would be it. It’s in his backyard and he’s appearing at the Axxess events. He may not step between the ropes in competition but the mere presence of the mysterious Stinger would send the City of Angels into hysteria.

PREDICTION: WE WILL SEE STING AT SUMMERSLA
