Crystal Ball – Battleground 2014

Jay Shannon draws upon all his predictive skills to figure out the winners and losers of an upcoming major wrestling event.

This PPV sets the stage for SummerSlam. This show will help build some existing feuds and start some new ones. Plus, there will be a new champion determined (Intercontinental). Let’s take a look at what we’ll see, tonight …

Naomi vs Cameron
Kick-off Show Grudge Match

The former Funkadactyls have split up. Cameron has gone heel and is trying to outshine Naomi. Naomi is a far superior wrestler to Camron. That’s not really going to matter much in this catfight. If WWE goes with their standard booking, Cameron will cheat and take the win. I think they just might try a new approach. Naomi clearly dominates Cameron and wins. Cameron comes back and complains about how the match wasn’t fair. This will likely lead to some odd matches, down the road. I’m going to go with experience on this one.

Predicted Winner: Naomi
Predicted Grade: 1.5

Jack Swagger vs Rusev

This match is tricky to call. If Swagger dominates Rusev, the big Bulgarian/Russians push pretty much evaporates. If Rusev destroys Swagger, this feud goes nowhere. I’m thinking that Rusev will get Swagger in the Accolade but will refuse to release it. He will end up disqualified, which will lead to a Flag Match at SummerSlam.

Predicted Winner (by reverse decision): Jack Swagger
Predicted Grade: 3.5

Dean Ambrose vs Seth Rollins

The attack on Monday will paint the scene for this match. Dean Ambrose is not going into this match anywhere near 100%. I initially thought that the match would just get thrown out but Seth needs to win. If not for the situation related to “Plan C”, I would have Seth lose here and then rebound to beat the person who holds the WWE World Title. Tonight, Seth is going to have to settle for taking first blood against his former Shield partner.

Predicted Winner: Seth Rollins
Predicted Grade: 2.75

A.J. Lee vs Paige
Divas Title Match

A.J. has been the most dominant Diva of the past couple of years. Paige may be better than Lee, eventually, but she is still so inexperienced. This will be a battle of the Black Widow vs the P.T.O.. It could go either way but I think A.J. is going to hang onto the Butterfly Belt on Sunday.

Predicted Winner: A.J. Lee
Predicted Grade: 1.5

Jimmy and Jey Uso vs Luke Harper and Erick Rowan
WWE Tag Team Title Match

I’m going to keep predicting that the Wyatt Family will win, until they do. With Dust2Dust (Goldust and Stardust) on the horizon, there really should be a heel team holding the belts. Wyatts vs Dust2Dust could be a study in mind games. Unfortunately, the Usos will become the sacrificial lambs (at least for now).

Predicted Winners (and New Tag Team Champions): Luke Harper and Erick Rowan
Predicted Grade: 3.0

Bray Wyatt vs Chris Jericho

This should be a wild match. Bray is just coming off a less-than-successful feud with John Cena. Jericho is just returning to the WWE. Jericho hasn’t had a lot of luck with the opening matches in feuds (remember Fandango at Wrestlemanai?). Since I’m pretty sure this is just the opening refrain in this Rope Operetta, expect Bray to take this one. Bray and Jericho will have some kind of epic clash at SummerSlam.

Predicted Winner: Bray Wyatt
Predicted Grade: 3.75

Battleground Battle Royal
(This will determine the new Intercontinental Champion)

Cesaro, Kofi Kingston, Great Khali, Rob Van Dam, Big E, Dolph Ziggler, Ryback, Curtis Axel, AlbertoDel Rio, Bo Dallas, Sheamus, Fandango, Sin Cara, Zack Ryder, The Miz, Diego, R-Truth, Xavier Woods, Heath Slater, and Titus O’Neil

I left this match for last when I was doing my predictions. This one has a ton of options. It is much easier to figure out who will not be taking the ivory strap. Ryback and Curtis Axel will likely continue their feud with Dust2Dust, so forget them. Fandango and Dolph already have an established feud, so they are out. There are quite a few Cannon Fodder guys in the match (Diego, Slater, Truth, Woods, Ryder, etc…). In reality, the top contenders should be Del Rio, Cesaro, Kofi, Sheamus and Miz. I think Sheamus won’t get the double belts but he may face the winner, at SummerSlam, to unify the straps. I am so tempted to go with The Miz to take this one, but I did say, on Monday, that I would have an unexpected pick. Therefore…

Predicted Winner (and New I-C Champ): Bo Dallas
Predicted Grade: 3.75

John Cena vs Roman Reigns vs Kane vs Randy Orton
Fatal Four Way for the WWE World Title

I’ve seen some promotional material for SummerSlam. Looks like Brock Lesnar is on his way back to the WWE. Brock, if he does return, needs someone big to battle, after the whole Undertaker thing. That means, to me, John Cena. Kane and Orton are going to cancel each other out. I expect the two of them to feud at Summerslam. Roman will likely shift into a feud with Seth Rollins or may even face Triple H, at Summerslam. I think the end will come when Kane and Orton implode and Cena picks the bones. AA to Orton seals the deal.

Predicted Winner: John Cena
Predicted Grade: 3.0

Final Thoughts:

Like I mentioned earlier, this is the set-up for SummerSlam. Cena is going to go forward and feud with Brock Lesnar. Wyatt and Jericho will have another brutal battle. Randy Orton and Kane will square off, as will HHH and Roman Reigns. Sunday’s show is going to be good but SummerSlam has the potential to be excellent. We’ll see…
