Monday Night RAW Wrestlers of the Week for July 14, 2014

3. Jack Swagger — for getting the upperhand physically over Rusev after a heated U.S.-Russia Détente between Rusev/Lana and The Real Americans:

The claims by Lana and Rusev of Russia’s superiority were obviously going to rub a number of members on the WWE roster the wrong way. Big E tried to represent the United States in victorious fashion, but he was unsuccessful. Now it’s time for Jack Swagger, backed by Zeb Colter, to try and get the job done.

A challenge for a match at Battleground had been offered to Rusev by The Real Americans, but it wasn’t responded to. During a Détente between the American representatives, Swagger and Colter, and the Russian representatives, Rusev and Lana, they would aim to get an answer for this Sunday.

Lana and Colter pretty much did all of the talking, with a few words here and there from Rusev. But after talks of a political nature, Colter had enough and got down to business. He asked Rusev when he was going to step up, be a man and face Swagger at Battleground. Rusev responded, “This is war,” effectively accepting the challenge. As the Russians stepped away, Colter continued to speak to them. He told Lana directly that he always wondered who wore the pants and skirt and their group, and now he knows. He also directed her to tell Rusev three words — “We The People.”

Lana was infuriated and slapped Colter across the face. Swagger then noticed Rusev coming in from behind her, so he moved in for a spear to take the big man down. He pounded away with some rights until Lana pulled him off by the hair, allowing Rusev to get in a shot before he could grab Swagger and toss him into one of the podiums. Rusev then drilled Swagger in the corner with a splash before signaling for a kick. When he went to deliver the kick, however, Swagger caught his foot and put him down with a Patriot Lock. Rusev was in obvious pain and finally managed to escape underneath the bottom rope, left hobbling away with Lana as The Real Americans clearly gained an edge six days before the big match at Battleground.

Rusev has been pretty unstoppable at this point in his WWE career, and Swagger will still go into the pay-per-view as an underdog. But nobody has gotten under the skin of Lana and Rusev like The Real Americans have, and that mental edge combined with Swagger’s legitimate ability could be the right combination to finally knock Rusev down.

2. Dolph Ziggler — for taking advantage of the new alliance between Fandango’s former dance partners to get a victory and some time with Summer Rae and Layla:

Fandango severely overestimated his appeal to Summer Rae and Layla, who had been fighting for the ballroom dancer’s affection lately. They finally had enough of going after him and decided to form an alliance between themselves instead during a match on Smackdown. With Fandango as the special guest referee, they attacked him and partnered up with each other in a dance.

Fandango had to quickly get back up on the horse this Monday on RAW, where he faced Dolph Ziggler in a match between two participants in the 20-man battle royal at Battleground for the Intercontinental Championship.

Fandango was in position to gain control of the match and go to work on Ziggler, but his music hit the arena and caused him to lose focus. When he turned left, he noticed Rae and Layla dancing on the announce table. He did take a few shots at Ziggler while this occurred, but he was far too distracted to get a meaningful offense going. Ziggler was eventually able to shrug him off, deliver a dropkick and hit a Fameasser off a rollup counter to get Fandango pinned on the mat for three.

After the bell, Rae and Layla entered the ring and hung onto Ziggler, even planting kisses on his face, all while Fandango sat in the corner and watched.

While Ziggler got the win and the girls for a huge confidence boost going into that battle royal at Battleground, Fandango is left to sulk with a myriad of problems.

1. The Miz — for getting what has to be considered an upset over United States Champion and fellow Intercontinental Championship battle royal participant at Battleground, Sheamus:

The Miz’ return to the WWE might have been ruined by Chris Jericho’s return to the WWE, but he is still intent on cramming his face (i.e., money maker) down everyone’s throat. He is entered into the 20-man battle royal at Battleground, where the winner will become the new Intercontinental Champion.

On this week’s RAW, he faced another member of that battle royal, Sheamus, who can unify the United States Championship and Intercontinental Title if he comes out victorious. Miz’ plan was to avoid taking a Brogue Kick to the money maker in this match, and he even had his face plastered on the Tron over the course of the bout. To many, that plan made it almost too obvious that Miz would end up getting drilled in the face with the Brogue Kick.

Miz tried to put the match away with a Skull Crushing Finale, but Sheamus was able to throw him off and get him into the corner. The Celtic Warrior charged in for that expected Brogue Kick, but Miz managed to move out of the way just in time. With Sheamus caught up on the turnbuckle, Miz moved in for a rollup and kept the United States Champion’s shoulders pinned to the mat for a three to score the upset.

Sheamus clearly didn’t expect that, and Miz immediately rolled to the outside to celebrate his win and the fact that his money maker went unharmed, as well as to get an up-close look at the Intercontinental Title belt. This doesn’t diminish Sheamus’ chances of coming out on top in the battle royal, but it does provide Miz a healthy boost as he tries to be the last man standing on Sunday.
