Crystal Ball: (ROH’s) Best in the World 2014

Jay Shannon draws upon all his predictive powers to try and figure out the winners and losers of an upcoming major wrestling event.

Ring of Honor finally brings its best to Pay Per View. Best in the World will have most of the titles on the line. Plus, there are going to be several heated Grudge Matches. Let’s take a look…

ACH vs Takaaki Watanabe vs Caprice Coleman vs Tadarius Thomas vs B.J. Whitmer vs Tommaso Ciampa
Six Man Mayhem
(Winner gets a future TV Title Shot)

I’ve very familiar with all these men, with the exception of Watanabe. My first thoughts would be that Ciampa will take this one. That just seems a little too obvious. Thomas and Whitmer are both part of The Decade, so that might cause some stress within the elite group. I think I’m going to go with the Japanese superstar, Watanabe, to take the win.

Predicted Winner: Takaaki Watanabe
Predicted Grade: 3.5 out of a possible 5

Roderick Strong (w/Adam Page) vs Cedric Alexander
Submission Match

The fans are going to absolutely love this war. Expect tons of highlights as these two men go at it. I think Page is going to be the key to this outcome. I expect him to throw in the towel, this giving the win to Cedric. That is going to lead to an ousting of Page (Thomas may get the boot, as well).

Predicted Winner (by Proxy Submission): Cedric Alexander
Predicted Grade; 3.75

“Mr. Wrestling” Kevin Steen vs “The Last Real Man” Silas Young

Silas is trying to make his place in the company. He is one of the most under-rated performers in the industry, today. That being said, I just can’t imagine Silas being able to beat “Mr. Wrestling”. This is not going to be a pretty, scientific battle. This is going to be “Monkey Butt Ugly”. In the end, I think Steen will catch Silas with the Package Piledriver to take the win.

Predicted Winner: Kevin Steen
Predicted Grade: 3.0

Mark and Jay Briscoe vs Michael Bennett (w’Maria) and Matt Hardy

I really hate my prediction on this one. I’m not a Matt Hardy fan. Never have been. I do, however, think Michael Bennett is one of the fastest rising stars in the business. Since the ICONIC title is not on the line, in this one, I think The Kingdom is going to defeat the veteran brother duo. I’m waiting for The Hardys vs the Briscoes. Since Jeff is going to be making an appearance in Ring of Honor, soon, this just might happen. I could see The Kingdom taking this one with Stereo Twists of Fate.

Predicted Winners: Matt Hardy and Michael Bennett
Predicted Grade: 3.0

Matt Taven vs Jay Lethal
World TV Title Match
(Truth Martini will be Handcuffed to the Ring Post

Ring of Honor pushed that Truth would be taken out of the mix by being handcuffed to the ring post. That is not going to stop Truth, in the least. I’m certain that Truth will tip the balances in favor of his man. Sadly, Taven will slip back down the ladder…but only for a short time.

Predicted Winner: Jay Lethal
Predicted Grade: 3.5

ReDRagon (Kyle O’Reilly and Bobby Fish) vs Christopher Daniels and Kazarian
ROH World Tag Team Match

This one really has me scratching my head. Both teams are excellent. Both have held tag gold, multiple times. Size and speed are about the same. Kaz and Daniels do have the slight experience edge. My grandfather used to always tell me: “When in doubt, always go with the champions”. For some reason, this is stuck in my head. So even though just about every other instinct in me is saying to go with a title switch, I think I’ll listen to the words of the late, great Cots Shannon, so…

Predicted Winners: ReDRagon
Predicted Grade: 4.0

Adam Cole vs “Unbreakable” Michael Elgin
ROH World Title Match

Elgin is running on pure emotion. The Kingdom cut his hair, attacked his wife and insulted the fans. That just may be too much to overcome to stay focused on the prize. MsChif will likely counter Maria. While that will be a good start, I just don’t think it will be enough. I so seriously want Elgin to win this but I’m afraid that it just won’t be on Sunday. Darn it.

Predicted Winner: Adam Cole
Predicted Grade: 4.75

Post Match: I have heard the strongest of rumors that C.M. Punk just might be in the building, on Sunday. I so expect Cole to win and start crowing about being the best in the world. Suddenly, Punk will come out and say something to the effect “If you want to be the Best, you do have to beat the Best”. That sets up a future Punk vs Cole battle.
