Nashville’s NWA Southern All-Star Wrestling announced earlier in April 2014 the NWA World Heavyweight champion would start his world tour at the SAW Mill.
NWA SAW announced the opponent selected to face off against the Satoshi Kojima on Friday, May 30, 2014, at Collision Course. Mike Sircy, one of NWA Southern All-Star Wrestling’s board members released the following statement:
“In the past couple of weeks there has been speculation about who would be the challenger for the NWA World Heavyweight champion in his first American tour.
“After a lot of speculation and meetings in the NWA, as to who would receive this shot at the world title and whom would be the one to showcase their talent against one of the top legends in New Japan and in the NWA. The NWA has come to a conclusion to who the contender will be. Here at SAW we strive to do things out of the ordinary to live up to the “A Cut Above The Rest”.
“The opponent for the world title —a lot of the main stream wrestling media has speculated that it would be Rob Conway, Damien Wayne, Jax Dane, and others that have already faced the NWA World champion in the past. As for me, I like to root for the underdog. The one person has worked hard and has been overlooked for his accomplishments. I have recovered from five heart attacks and open heart surgery over the past year, I’ve had a good long look from afar at the wrestling industry. And in my opinion, this person has shown me that he is the most deserving of the golden opportunity that awaits him. It makes me proud to announce that the current television champion, Jeremiah Plunkett, will be the one to receive this golden opportunity for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship on May 30, 2014, in Millersville, Tennessee.”
After this announcement on NWA SAW’s show NWA Inferno, Jeremiah Plunkett stated the following in an exclusive interview on Tuesday, May 6, 2014:
“I almost didn’t believe it when I heard it. I’m still pinching myself to make sure this is real. Having been selected to challenge the heavyweight wrestling of the world is a huge honor, but when that champion is a Japanese legend such as Satoshi Kojima, that honor is increased tenfold. I don’t have much time to revel in them moment, however. This honor presents the opportunity of a lifetime and the most important match of my career thus far. Training begins now! I will be ready!”
What better teacher to go to than wrestling legend The Wild Eyed Southern Boy Tracy Smothers. Jeremiah went to Smothers to get a true lesson from the NWA Wrestling legend. “You’re a marked man in the NWA,” Smothers told Plunkett on Saturday, “and everybody is talking about Jeremiah Plunkett. Whatever I can do to help you, I’ve been blessed to help so many guys that made it in this sport. You’ve got the heart and the desire. You’ve got everything to gain and nothing to lose.”
Smothers had twenty-one tours in Japan for New Japan, All Japan, WINGS, IGWA and more. So who better for Jeremiah Plunkett to learn the Japanese style and get the training that he needs to face off against Kojima.
