Crystal Ball: Royal Rumble

Jay Shannon draws upon all his predictive powers to try and figure out the winners and losers of an upcoming major wrestling event.

Time for the Road to Wrestlemania to get rolling. First stop…The Royal Rumble. It’s a mix of classic talent and new guys in a war to kick 2014 in style. Let’s take a look at the matches and see what might happen…

The New Age Outlaws (Road Dogg and Billy Gunn) vs The Brotherhood (Cody Rhodes and Goldust

Royal Rumble Pre-Show Match
Tag Team Title Match

I’ve always been a big fan of the New Age Outlaws. Heck, I was one of 400 that chanted along with Road Dogg at an indy show over in the Bay Area, 4 years back. Road Dogg and Billy Gunn are looking better today than when they held the tag belts on five different occasions. Part of me would love to see the Outlaws take the straps. I just don’t think it would benefit the tag team division for them to win. With Goldust adding so many new moves to his arsenal and Cody being at the peak of his career, I really think the Brothers Rhodes will retain.

Predicted Winner: The Brotherhood
Predicted Grade: 3.0 out of a possible 5

Big Show vs Brock Lesnar

Big Show has been able to show up Lesnar in a few confrontations. When it comes to the “Big Stage”, I think Show will put up a decent fight but Brock needs the momentum for the expected battle against Batista. As much as I dislike Brock Lesnar, I think its almost a given that Lesnar absolutely has to win on Sunday. If Brock were to lose, it’s time for him to hang it up and just head back to his MMA stuff or whatever he decides to do next. Expect the Kimura Lock to play a major roll in the match, even though that moves really comes across as weak.

Predicted Winner: Brock Lesnar
Predicted Grade: 2.0

Daniel Bryan vs Bray Wyatt

Predictions: Two Words – Harper and Rowan. There is no way that Bray’s two faithful henchmen are going to allow their Fearless Leader to suffer defeat at the hands of Daniel Bryan. I have a feeling that either the Usos or the Brotherhood will come out to assist Daniel before Bray can hit Sister Abigail on him.

Predicted Winner: Match Thrown Out
Predicted Grade: 2.0

John Cena vs Randy Orton
WWE World Championship Title Match

Randy Orton seems to be living a charmed life, right now. While Randy is a decent wrestler, he really shouldn’t be where he is right now. John Cena should be able to wipe up the canvas with The Viper. I was originally hoping to see Daniel Bryan vs John Cena for the WWE World title at Wrestlemania. While that could still happen (there is always Elimination Chamber), I think Randy is going to survive Cena’s challenge on Sunday. I don’t think it will be as blatant and ridiculous as how Magnus survived A.J. Styles and Sting but Randy will likely pull some under-handed shenanigans to take the win.

Predicted Winner: Randy Orton
Predicted Grade: 4.0

The Royal Rumble Match

This one is almost impossible to decide. When Daniel Bryan was a part of the Wyatt Family, I was certain that he was going to win (as I mentioned above). Now that he’s split from the group, that idea is out the window. Batista is being heavily pushed as the next guy to challenge. I see him fighting Brock Lesnar at Mania, so both he and Brock are out. I was tempted to go with Curtis Axel, since he’s been trapped in mid-card Hell since he lost the Intercontinental title. I don’t think so, now that I think of it, a little more. In my mind, it’s down to two possible winners. It depends on if Sheamus actually makes his rumored return at Rumble. If Sheamus does return, he takes the match. If Sheamus doesn’t return, I’m going with Roman Reigns. He would be the last guy that people would expect to win it. I had thought about Kofi Kingston but I just don’t know if he can carry a high-profile Wrestlemania match. Talent wise, he could but he’s floundered near mid-card for so long, lately, that I think the fans might bore of the idea of putting him in the top match. Sorry, Kofi.

Predicted Winner: Sheamus (if he returns)
Roman Reigns (if
Sheamus doesn’t)
Predicted Grade: 4.5

Final Thoughts:

I expect another match or two to be thrown in at the last minute. I’m hoping for Naomi vs A.J. Lee for the Divas title. I know the weather, in and around Philly, has been dreadful. This entire card could change if some of the people just can’t make it to the show. I do think the WWE is going to seriously pull out all the stops for this one. I have Sunday off so I just might plop down the money for this one. Of course, will be here with all the results and reactions.
