An exciting evening concluded with a somber mood as one of the greatest fighters in MMA history could possibly have reached the end of his career.

The highly anticipated rematch pitting Anderson Silva against Chris Weidman was finished in disgusting fashion as the challenger Silva broke his leg on an attempted leg kick. This followed a first round in which Weidman took Silva down, knocked Silva down, and controlled Silva from the top, hammering away inside of the former champion’s guard.

Anderson Silva was rushed to the hospital where he would have emergency surgery to repair his tibia and fibula, and one would assume his career is over. While former UFC fighter Corey Hill returned from an injury similar to this, he was also much younger than that of the 38-year old Silva.

It’s unfortunate as a cloud of uncertainty will be cast over Chris Weidman’s title reign, and it shouldn’t be. The man fought Anderson Silva as well as anyone else, multiple times.

Also headlining the card was megastar, and UFC Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey defending her strap against bitter rival Miesha Tate in a rematch of their 2012 scrap. In one of the most exciting women’s MMA bouts in history, Rousey utilized her Olympic level judo to take Miesha Tate down a half-dozen times on her way to yet another armbar victory.

After the fight, Ronda Rousey basked in the boos of the Las Vegas crowd, fully embracing her heel role, and perhaps the role of new face of the UFC brand. In addition to her two UFC fights in 2013, she also filmed two major motion pictures, and filmed a reality show.
It was also announced that in just seven weeks, Rousey will face fellow Olympian Sara McMann at UFC 170, in an effort to capitalize on the Winter Olympic games.
