Crystal Ball – BattleGround 2013

Jay Shannon draws upon all his predictive powers to try and figure out the winners and losers of an upcoming major wrestling event.

BattleGround is a new Pay Per View for the WWE. There is no real theme for it, per se. There are some definite interesting stipulations in this one. I’m going to do my best to try and sort this one out. This one isn’t even close to an easy PPV to dissect.

Damien Sandow vs Dolph Ziggler
Kick Off Pre-Show Match

Prediction: You really have to feel bad for Damien Sandow. He got placed into a decent, high-profile feud with Cody Rhodes, only to have the rug yanked out from under him. When Cody got “fired”, Damien found himself lost. Yes, he has the Money in the Bank but no one really seems to care. Why they threw Damien in against Dolph Ziggler is beyond me. I guess WWE (Semi)-Creative looked at the two guys and said “Well, we don’t really have anything to do with these guys. What the Hell…let’s put them against each other”. I really hope Dolph and Damien go in with the right attitude of “Let’s steal the show.” These two have all the potential in the world. I have a funny feeling that Damien is going to lose in this one. I also think we might just see “Mr. Money in the Bank”, a little later on. Damien losing will only help strengthen what I think will happen later…

Predicted Winner: Dolph Ziggler
Predicted Ranking: 3.5 out of a possible 5

A.J. Lee vs Brie Bella
Divas Championship Match

Predictions: Lee has been very critical of the stars of Total Divas. Lee has recently aligned herself with Tamina Snuka. There really aren’t too many women left for her to join forces with. The Divas division is at its lowest level since the early 90s. To me, this is a “Who the Hell Cares?” match. It’s about time for Lee to drop the belt but I just don’t think this will be where it happens. Expect Tamina to get involved and Lee ends up disqualified. No title change but Brie wins.

Your Winner (by disqualification): Brie Bella
Predicted Ranking: 1.0

C.M. Punk vs Ryback

Predictions: Punk has been feuding with Paul Heyman and his crew since shortly after Wrestlemania. He’s already had to deal with Brock Lesnar and Curtis Axel. Now, Ryback has joined the forces of Paul Heyman. Punk has a goal of taking out the various “Heyman Guys” on the path towards a final confrontation with Paul Heyman. Punk has lost most of the major battles, so far. I think this one could be the turning point, for Punk. Ryback is going to beat Punk into the canvas for most of the match. In the end, Punk is going to draw off the crowd and take the win. This match may well lead to a Gauntlet Match for Punk at Survivor Series. Punk will have to go through Axel, Ryback and (maybe) Brock Lesnar to finally get to Paul Heyman.

Predicted Winner: C.M. Punk
Predicted Ranking: 3.5

Cody and Dustin Rhodes vs Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns

Predictions: Ok, if the Rhodes Boys win this one, Cody and Dustin/Goldust get their jobs back. If they lose, neither will ever work in the WWE, again. On top of that, Dusty Rhodes will lose his position at the WWE Training Facility. If the Rhodes family were to lose, there would be nowhere for the WWE to really go with this storyline. I think Dusty will be there to counter Dean Ambrose. It’s going to really look like the Rhodes are going to be gone. The brothers are going to pull a “Hail Mary” kind of thing to upset The Shield. This may well lead to the Brothers Rhodes vs The Shield for the tag belts, soon.

Predicted Winners: Cody and Dustin Rhodes
Predicted Ranking: 2.75

Bray Wyatt vs Kofi Kingston

Predictions: Bray is on one Hell of a roll, right now. I just can’t imagine Bray losing, even to the ultra-talented Kofi. Kofi will give it a good run and seem so close to finishing off the demented leader of the Wyatt Family. As Kofi goes for Trouble in Paradise, Bray will move and plant Kofi with Sister Abigail.

Predicted Winner: Bray Wyatt
Predicted Ranking: 3.0

Curtis Axel vs R-Truth
Intercontinental Championship Match

Predictions: This match was thrown in at the last minute. R-Truth beat Axel on Raw, after Axel was distracted by C.M. Punk’s music. While I’ve been a big fan of Ron Killings all the way back to his K-Kwik days, I just don’t think he can overcome Axel. If I were going by my heart, Truth would be wearing the ivory strap after this match. Sadly, he won’t win this one.

Predicted Winner: Curtis Axel
Predicted Ranking: 3.25

Alberto Del Rio vs Rob Van Dam
Hardcore Match for the World Title

Predictions: The WWE has seriously screwed over RVD since bringing him back. Yeah, he’s been in several high profile matches but he’s come up short on most of them. This match should be right up RVD’s alley, as it is Hardcore. This one is going to get evil. Expect tons of “toys” to emerge from under the ring. Plus, RVD is going to go for so many spectacular moves. ADR should be able to give as good as he gets. While I hate what I’m about to type, the ending of this match has become routine. RVD will manage to overcome Alberto and take him out after a match that exhausts both of them. Damien Sandow, who lost earlier, will return to “Cash In” and take the easy pin on RVD. With Cody getting his job back, that would lead to the rebirth of the Cody vs Damien feud.

Predicted Winner: Rob Van Dam…then Damien Sandow
Predicted Ranking: 4.5

Randy Orton vs Daniel Bryan
WWE Title Match

Predictions: This one is rather complicated. There are so many players in this one: Orton, Bryan, Triple H/Stephanie, Big Show and The Shield. Add to that mix the fact that Daniel Bryan is about to get married. Daniel Bryan is 10x the wrestler Orton will ever be, honestly. Even though I know the first rule in Wrestling Booking is to send the fans home happy, it’s not going to happen, this time. Randy is going to go complete off the deep end and brutalize Daniel to the point of ridiculousness. I expect Brie Bella to finally come down to the ring and end up throwing in the towel to save her fiancé. That will lead to a few nice storyline with the engaged couple having a few issues. They will certainly flesh that all out on Total Divas. When Randy refused to stop the annihilation of Daniel Bryan, Big Show will lumber down and nail Orton with the KO Punch. There may be some question as to whether Randy was disqualified for not stopping or if the towel throw will count. They show will likely go off the air with the status of the title in question. HHH will come out and make a Triple Threat match for the next PPV: Randy Orton vs Daniel Bryan vs Big Show

Predicted Winner (by match stoppage): Randy Orton
Predicted Ranking: 3.0

In Conclusion:

This is a minor Pay Per View, in the grand scope of things. The WWE needs to do a few really memorable things to put this PPV on the map. The show should be solid. Alberto Del Rio vs Rob Van Dam will likely be the crowd favorite. Dolph vs Damien might well be the best match, technically. The show is filled with several “filler” matches but it should still be a decent show.
