Crystal Ball: Extreme Rules 2013

Jay Shannon draws upon all his predictive powers to take a look at a major upcoming wrestling event.

This has possibly been the longest that WWE has gone between Pay-Per-Views in a long time. Wrestlemania is a fleeting memory and now it’s time to take the battles to new levels. There have been some serious changes on this card, which I will talk about in a bit. Here are my predictions with the semi-logical thought process behind the choices.

The Miz vs Cody Rhodes (Pre-Show Match)

These two have battled, numerous times, over the past few years. Cody is trying to return to a singles career and Miz is just back from filming a new movie.

Honestly, I think Cody is a much better all-around wrestler than Miz. That’s not to say that Miz isn’t a decent wrestler but Cody has the lineage and the training from so many greats. On paper, Cody should wrestle circles around Miz. That’s just not going to happen. Miz is going to take this one with the Figure Four, period.

Your Winner: The Miz
Extreme Ranking: 3.25

Chris Jericho vs Fandango

The former Johnny Curtis returned to WWE as a Ballroom Dancer character. Most fans figured he would be a quick Flash-in-the-Pan. Then he beat Jericho at Wrestlemania. Now, everyone is just about ready to take Fandango as a legit wrestler. Jericho and Fandango have had a few little skirmishes, since Mania. On Sunday, they battle once again.

I just don’t see Fandango getting two major wins over Jericho. Ok, I get it that Fanny needed to win at Mania to be considered as an actual viable character. I see the ending coming by way of the Walls of Jericho. Fandango taps out and then spends the next couple of weeks/months complaining that he is a dancer and he could not risk losing the ability to dance.

Your Winner: Chris Jericho
Extreme Rankng: 3.5

Randy Orton vs Big Show
Extreme Rules Match

At Wrestlemania, Big Show got ticked off at Sheamus and Orton after they lost to The Shield. Show knocked them both out. Sheamus moved over to feud with Mark Henry and Orton got Show.

I’m having a bit of a hard time with this one. Both men are so far out of the title picture, right now, that a win isn’t really going to elevate either one. Both men lost at Wrestlemania, so that doesn’t help. The final determining factor is the outcome of another match…Sheamus vs Mark Henry. From my experiences working with various wrestling groups, over the years, there is usually a balance of heel and face wins. I think Big Show is going to survive this one and take out Orton with the KO Punch. I think the announcers will push the fact that Show was, at one time, an Extreme Champion.

Your Winner: Big Show
Extreme Ranking: 2.5

Sheamus vs Mark Henry
Strap Match

Mark Henry survived Ryback and then set his sights on Sheamus. The two have attacked each other over the past few weeks.

Mark has been on a huge roll, as of late. My first thoughts is that Mark will take this one and move towards a championship challenge. Once I think a bit deeper, I’m going with Sheamus. It would make much more sense to have the Celtic Warrior win. Sheamus is on the poster. That is usually a good sign that Sheamus will win. Also, the World Champion is a heel. It is really rare to see Heel vs Heel (though they have been talking about Dolph vs Swagger). Plus, Mark Henry got a big win at Mania and Sheamus didn’t. It’s all about balance. Since Orton is going to lose, Sheamus has to win. That may only make sense in my twisted little mind but it’s how I rationalize my choice.

Your Winner: Sheamus
Extreme Ranking: 3.0

Kane and Daniel Bryan vs Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns
Tornado Tag Match for the Tag Titles

The Shield (Reigns, Ambrose and Rollins) have been running rough shod over everyone in sight. They seem almost impossible to stop.

It’s time for a title change. Kane and Daniel have held the belts too long and the fans are getting bored with them. The Shield would be the perfect team to put in charge of the belts. That would give a lot of teams like Prime Time Players, Usos, Colons, Tons of Funk and a whole slew of makeshift teams to try and take the straps off the rogue group. I could see a SummerSlam match pitting The Shield vs The Brothers of Destruction. Plus, The Shield could defend under Freebirds Rules (any 2 of the 3 co-holders of the belts could defend).

Your Winner: The Shield
Extreme Ranking: 3.0

Kofi Kingston vs Dean Ambrose
U.S. Title Match

Dean has been running wild with The Shield. This time, he goes solo to try and take the US title from Kofi.

My first question is simple…Why the Hell is Dean getting this shot? He’s a decent wrestler but he hasn’t really done much as a singles competitor. It would have made more sense to have Dean join his “brothers” for a 3-on-2 Handicap Tag Title Match. It would make absolutely zero sense to have Dean take the US title. That would drive a wedge into a strong unit. No way in Heaven or Hell does Dean take the strap. As much as it irks me to say so, I expect this one to end up a Run In by Reigns and Rollins to draw the DQ win for Kofi.

Your Winner (by DQ): Kofi Kingston
Extreme Ranking: 2.0

Alberto Del Rio vs Jack Swagger
“I Quit” Match to determine the Number One Contender to the World Title

This match was originally set to be a Triple Threat Ladder Match for the World title. However, Dolph Ziggler is out of action, for the moment, with a concussion. To give Dolph time to heal, Del Rio and Swagger were placed in this battle. The winner will get a future title shot when Dolph gets back.

This is another one that is very difficult to call, for me. Del Rio is due a rematch against Dolph. Swagger’s whole “Real American” campaign would have to be thrown out the window if he were to face Ziggler. While I know this is set to be an “I Quit” match, I’m wondering if we are going to see an Arnold Skaaland flashback with Zeb Colter throwing in the towel and “Quitting” for Swagger. That could lead to tension between Zeb and Jack. Del Rio could then move on to face Dolph while Jack and Zeb sorted out their issues.

Your Winner: Alberto Del Rio
Extreme Ranking: 4.0

Triple H vs Brock Lesnar
Steel Cage Match

Lesnar returned to the WWE about a year ago. He feuded with John Cena and then went after Triple H and the McMahons. HHH and Lesnar have split a pair of huge matches. This one is seen as the Rubber Match.

I had to put aside that I really can’t stand Brock Lesnar. Honestly, I’ve never been the biggest Triple H fan, either. Part of me thinks Lesnar has the advantage, since he fought inside the Cage while doing his MMA run. I’m just not sure if that will truthfully play that much into this battle. MMA and Wrestling are two completely different animals. Triple H just can’t afford to look weak in this match. I wouldn’t be surprised to see an old-fashioned Crimson Mask (blood) to make an appearance. Since this is being billed as their final battle, I have to go with HHH to take this one. I do expect Lesnar to attack HHH, after the match, and “Break” HHH’s arm with the Kimura Lock. Lesnar will likely move over to face John Cena. HHH can then slip back into the corporate spot and the fans are happy.

Your Winner: Triple H
Extreme Ranking: 3.5

John Cena vs Ryback
Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Title

John Cena defeated The Rock at Wrestlemania. Ryback got his butt handed to him by Mark Henry. The Shield attacked Ryback and Big Hungry got all ticked off that John Cena didn’t come to his aid. Ryback took a definite Heel Turn as he attacked Cena, several times, in the past few weeks.

John Cena had a bad Achilles Tendon. That makes it difficult to stand. This is a Last Man Standing battle. Logic would say that Ryback would target the bad wheel and try to make it impossible for Cena to stand. I just don’t think Ryback is ready to wear one of the top two straps in the WWE. Somehow, Cena is going to survive this seemingly impossible challenge. I just hope and pray that don’t leave Duct Tape under the ring. Just ask Batista about Cena’s use of that bit of construction wizardry. I just see Ryback getting trapped under something and not being able to get up.

Your Winner: John Cena
Extreme Ranking: 3.0

Wrapping Things Up:

So, when it came to my Wrestlemania Predictions, I only missed it by one. I’m likely not going to do so well, this time around. Creative always tends to do odd things just after Wrestlemania. The only match that I’m confident with is the Cena match. Most of the other matches I’m reasonably happy with my picks. A couple are a simple roll of the dice kind of thing. We’ll see what happens, on Sunday.
