On January 18, 1971 the world was stunned when WWWF World Champion Bruno Sammartino lost the title to Ivan Koloff at Madison Square Garden. Amazingly though Sammartino saw this as a God-send. He had held the title since May 1963 after thrashing “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers in just 61 seconds at MSG (the “old” MSG where the ’71 match was at the “new” MSG) and needed a break to spend time with his family and to let his body heal. This interview was just a few months after the title loss — during his return to MSG — and I was there with my tape recorder and got this exclusive interview!
