Ken Carson Becomes #1 Contender at NWA Houston’s “Rise Above” (September 30, 2011)

If NWA Board of Directors member Mike Sircy was looking on this past Friday in Cypress, he couldn’t have been happy by the end of the night. On September 9, he told Ken Carson in the middle of the ring that he would never receive a title shot as long as he was breathing. There was one small problem with that theory – he’s getting that title shot.
This past Friday night in Cypress, NWA Houston held a one night tournament to declare a new #1 Contender to Jaykus Plisken and his NWA Lonestar Championship. The winner of the tournament will receive a title shot, but will have to wait until Plisken faces NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce on October 14 at the Cypress VFW.
Carson defeated Hambone in the first match. Hambone missed a crucial moonsault off the top rope, allowing Carson to recover and hit a Code breaker-style move before getting the pin fall.
The “Texas Torture Machine” DJ King brought his new attitude to the tournament as he was able to pick up a win over Alex Reigns. King used a cross face submission to get the win, and move on to the second round. After the match, he continued the assault, causing more damage to Reigns.
The third match saw “One Man” Mike Dell successfully represent the Psycho Circus, as he gained a submission victory over Black Diamond. Ken Carson made his presence known, sprinting to the ring and causing a distraction to Diamond. Carson has been very vocal lately, claiming the man known as Black Diamond is actually his former tag partner Joey Diamond. The distraction allowed Dell to lock up Diamond in a single leg Boston Crab submission for the victory. Following the match, Dell hit a signature elbow drop from the top rope for good measure.
The final first-round match involved “The Name That Entertains” Jasper Davis and “Benchmark” Silky Baines. DJ King got involved during the match, getting cheap shots in where he could. But his interference wouldn’t be enough, as Jasper scored with a fireman’s carry bomb for the pin fall. Following the match, DJ and Silky launched an attack on Jasper then left him beaten and battered in the middle of the ring.
NWA Lonestar Women’s Champion Barbi Hayden came out for an autograph session with fans during the 1st intermission. All was going well, until former champion Jen-Alise stormed to the ring and stopped the festivities. Her complaint was based around the fact that on September 9; she lost her title to Hayden on a count out. She felt like she should still be champion. Moments later, Ken Carson came out and attacked Jen from behind.
That would set up the first of two semi-final matches, as Carson would face “One Man” Mike Dell. At one point, both Carson and the referee were down. As Dell tried to take advantage and go to the top rope, Barbi Hayden rolled in the ring to revive Carson. However her efforts were thwarted, as Dell came off the top rope with an elbow drop onto both Carson and Hayden. Immediately, Dell stood up and realized what he had done. When he questioned Hayden about what had happened, Carson had recovered and rolled him up for the victory. Carson had suddenly found himself in the finals, awaiting either Jasper Davis or DJ King.
The other semi-final match would see Jasper and DJ beat each other senseless throughout the match. Silky Baines, who was with DJ for the match, climbed onto the apron for a distraction. However Jasper saw it coming and sent DJ crashing into him. From there, Jasper hit the fireman’s carry bomb and picked up the pin fall victory.
Finally, it was main event time. Ken Carson and Jasper Davis were set to face off in the finals of the tournament. The winner of the match would be declared the #1 Contender to the NWA Lonestar Heavyweight Championship. Carson started off quick, attacking Davis before the bell. He kept control for most of the opening 10 minutes of the match. DJ King and Silky Baines hit the ring, but they were quickly cut off by the referee and sent back to the locker room. While this was going on, Carson covered his face in a blood-like liquid and threw Jasper a chair. When the referee turned around, he saw Jasper with the chair and called for the disqualification. However the match was restarted after the referee realized what had happened. Once the match was restarted, Carson tried to escape and tried to crawl over the top rope. Jasper caught him trying to leave, but Carson managed to dive over the top rope anyway. The referee only saw Carson go over the top rope, and disqualified Jasper again. According to NWA rules, being thrown over the top rope is an automatic disqualification.
Carson‘s smooth move not only gave him the win, but also punched his ticket for an upcoming championship match against Jaykus Plisken. The only catch is Carson will have to wait until after October 14 to cash in that title match. On that night, Jaykus is set for a match with NWA World Heavyweight Champion Adam Pearce at the Cypress VFW. In an exclusive interview following the match, Carson said he will be taking notes during that match and all but guaranteed a new NWA Lonestar Heavyweight Champion.
NWA Houston’s next show will be on October 14, entitled “Hear No Evil, See No Evil, Speak No Evil,” and will be held at the Cypress VFW located at 21902 Highway 290 (Northwest Freeway between Huffmeister and Telge).
