APTER’S ALLEY: WHAT WAS YOUR EDGE MOMENT?

Posted April 12th, 2011 by Bill Apter

From me — There are so many but when I think back to all the great Edge moments it was the matches where he and Christian teamed against Matt and Jeff Hardy. They were some of the most thrilling matches I have witnessed during all my years in the business.

Now it’s your turn — what was YOUR great Edge moment?

Man….There are so many. But, Edge and Christian defeating the Dudley Boyz and The Hardys in TLC match for The WWF/E World Tag Team Championship in one of his best matches that I have ever seen.

My favorite Edge moment would have to be his stint with Mick Foley. From the Hardcore match @ WM 22 where he put Foley through a flaming table, to One Night Stand’s tag match vs. Tommy Dreamer & Terry Funk. On that same PPV my all time favorite Edge moment was when he speared John Cena thru a table while wearing a trench coat and motorcycle helmet. The fans popped “Thank You Edge! Thank You Edge!” He was booed than than an hour earlier, now they loved him. That was awesome. Great storytelling in those 3 months or so.

My favorite Edge moment was in the weeks following his first (WWE) World title win over John Cena, including his unique Live Celebration! I had been pulling for him to get the championship for a long time.

Edge vs. John Cena vs. Rob Van Dam in Philadelphia on July 3, 2006 for the WWE heavyweight title. If I remember correctly, I gave Edge a mixed reaction, and was cheering for RVD at that time. :) Still a good match nonetheless.

Since Edge has had great success in singles and tag competition I’ll name one of each..
Best Tag Match: Wrestlemania 17 Edge and Christian vs The Hardys vs The Dudleys. I can still remember how mad I was that somehow E&C won that match(Rhyno) but it still one of the best tag matches I’ve ever seen..lots of crazy bumps from all men. Easy ***** match.
Best Singles Match: No DQ Edge vs Eddie Guererro on Smackdown 2002? I told myself I would never forget this match because it was sooooooo damn intense. This is still my favorite match on SmackDown EVER!!!! Maybe my favorite non-ppv match ever. So many near falls and completely insane spots for a mere tv taping but man…for those who have never seen this match..look it up..please. These are two examples of why Edge has to retire. But looking at his catalog, I’d say he was easily one of the best wrestlers/sports entertainers the WWE has ever produced.

It has to be the silliness! Yes, he was an awesome athlete, but he had a sense of humor. Two GREAT examples for me: Playing the Kazoo as he and Christian walked out with Kurt Angle, and “For the benefit of those with flash photography…” the five second pose. Hilarious!

Turning heel after the whole Matt Hardy/Lita scandal was a huge change for him, in my opinion. When I think of Edge, I think less about the tag teaming (though I remember the first time seeing him and Christian on RAW and so many of their terrific matches), and more about his singles career. He became so much more of a character when he went solo, and was the perfect opponent for John Cena because he was so intelligent and had so much charisma from what we had already seen. He may have been the bad guy, but he was the bad guy we loved to hate.

    Thank you, Edge.

The cashing in Money in the Bank…a typical angle now with MITB winners, but when Edge did it, it was unique and shocking. To me, that was one of the greatest angles of all time, and the one that jumped him into the main event status.

Edge is a legend, but I still feel he would be considered one of the best heels in history had WWE had him break the Undertaker’s streak in that WM main event…If taker was going to lose at WM, that was the night and Edge was the opponent.
