DIARY OF A JOURNEYMAN WRESTLER
Falls Counted Anywhere
I loved wrestling in stipulation matches. It meant a special listing in a program. It meant I was higher up on the card. It meant, depending on the promoter, more money. It meant that my opponent and I were through trying to beat each other up in just a regular match….we needed something extra, and that spells excitement to a regular fan. For me personally, it also usually meant I was going to bleed.
One of my favorite matches I was ever in was, and I am quoting the flyer in front of me, a
” Somebody May Die” match. The date, Saturday Feburary 26th, 2000. The place was Corinth, Mississippi for Southern Pro Wrestling. The opponent was Jimmy Von Dorn(DORN)(his gimic was being a direct descendant of a civil war general). The show took place at a carnival.
The funny part of this was that I never wrestled Von Dorn before that night. It was a falls count anywhere match for no other reason than thats what was advertised. I was the good guy for a change. I pumped up the crowd and then my opponent got on the mic. He procedes to run down the south, claiming he was from Biloxi, Hawaii, I think . I attacked him with his confederate flag, wrapping it around his face before giving a rather stiff chair shot. I unravelled him and threw him in the ring. I worked him over a bit before cutting me off. He gave me my receipt courtesy of a left hand that knocked me out of the ring. We never were back in the ring.
The next thing I know we are fighting amongst a few carnival games. He took the mallet from the strength game and used it on me…the hard way. To say I bled alot was like saying a kid likes to play with his toys. It was hard to see, as it was pertty thick. He worked me over for a bit more until he threw me into a few people who were not wrestling fans and really freaked them out. My retaliation was a handful of sand to the face. I brought him over to another game involving softballs. I used the softballs. His back was my target. 3 perfect shots from close range. I continued with a few more punches and a hard suplex on the dirt road and brought him over to a board free standing. The board had a girls dress on it with the head cut out for funny pictures. The finish was me placing his head on the cutout and have the pre prepared board fall so he fell back with his head perfectly placed on the ground. I lay on it for the 3 count and the win.
We did freak out unknowing carnival customers that day, and had a blast in the process….and no one died. I do have a butterfly “stitched” scar as a memory of the event.

This guy by far has the best column every week. I mean, I like Jay Shannon, but I feel like I was in the ring with this guy each time. What name did he wrestle under?
Wow…thanks for the compliment Kevin. You’ll have to read next weeks column for the answer.
